This is interesting... smoking pot may actually inhibit lung cancer.

Smoking pot not a major cancer risk: report

    By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Although both marijuana and tobacco smoke are packed with cancer-causing chemicals, other qualities of marijuana seem to keep it from promoting lung cancer, according to a new report.

The difference rests in the often opposing actions of the nicotine in tobacco and the active ingredient, THC, in marijuana, says Dr. Robert Melamede of the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

He reviewed the scientific evidence supporting this contention in a recent issue of Harm Reduction Journal.

Whereas nicotine has several effects that promote lung and other types of cancer, THC acts in ways that counter the cancer-causing chemicals in marijuana smoke, Melamede explained in an interview with Reuters Health.

"THC turns down the carcinogenic potential," he said.

For example, lab research indicates that nicotine activates a body enzyme that converts certain chemicals in both tobacco and marijuana smoke into cancer-promoting form. In contrast, studies in mice suggest that THC blocks this enzyme activity.

Another key difference, Melamede said, is in the immune system effects of tobacco and marijuana. Smoke sends irritants into the respiratory system that trigger an immune-regulated inflammatory response, which involves the generation of potentially cell-damaging substances called free radicals. These particles are believed to contribute to a range of diseases, including cancer.

But cannabinoids -- both those found in marijuana and the versions found naturally in the body -- have been shown to dial down this inflammatory response, Melamede explained.

Another difference between tobacco and marijuana smoking, he said, has to do with cells that line the respiratory tract. While these cells have receptors that act as docks for nicotine, similar receptors for THC and other cannabinoids have not been found.

Nicotine, Melamede said, appears to keep these cells from committing "suicide" when they are genetically damaged, by smoking, for instance. When such cells do not kill themselves off, they are free to progress into tumors.

THC, however, does not appear to act this way in the respiratory tract -- though, in the brain, where there are cannabinoid receptors, it may have the beneficial effect of protecting cells from death when they are damaged from an injury or stroke, according to Melamede.

All of this, he said, fits in with population studies that have failed to link marijuana smoking with a higher risk of lung cancer -- though there is evidence that pot users have more respiratory problems, such as chronic cough and frequent respiratory infections.

If marijuana does not promote lung cancer, that could factor into the ongoing debate over so-called medical marijuana. Melamede said he believes "marijuana has loads of medicinal value," for everything from multiple sclerosis, to the chronic pain of arthritis, to nausea caused by cancer treatment.

U.S. government officials, however, maintain that the evidence for medical marijuana is not there. Ten states allow people to use marijuana with a doctor's prescription, but the Supreme Court has ruled that federal law trumps state law.

So for every one cigarette you smoke .... smoke TWO joints.

    Perfect.

Are people who smoke "dumb," or does smoking dumb them down?

At least one connection - that long-term smoking brings down IQ - has been suggested by a new University of Michigan study.

Although many smokers claim a cigarette helps them concentrate and feel more alert, years of tobacco use may have the opposite effect, dimming the speed and accuracy of a person's thinking ability and bringing down their IQ, according to the study of 172 alcoholic and non-alcoholic men that had initially been aimed at examining the long-term effects of alcoholism on the brain and thinking skills.

The Israel Cancer Association has used the IQ-lowering phenomenon to promote smoking-cessation courses.

While the researchers confirmed previous findings that alcoholism is associated with thinking problems and lower IQ, their analysis also revealed that long-term smoking is too.

The effect on memory, problem-solving and IQ was most pronounced among those who had smoked for years.

The findings are the first to suggest a direct relationship between smoking and neurocognitive function among men with alcoholism

    REGARDING THE ISSUE OF IQ

I was a "pot head" (wake-n-bake/lie-n-fry) for a good number of years. I even went to meetings stoned, it made them easier to bear.....

When you smoke pot consistently for a long period of time, IQ becomes relative. The brain seems to develop 2 individual IQ's, stoned IQ and sober IQ.

The difference between the two is that things you learn when you are REALLY stoned are truly difficult to recall when you are sober.

For example, I would come home from a party, high out of my mind, and hide my weed. I told myself "ok, self, you hid your weed here, don't forget!" When I got up the next day, I could never remember what the heck I did with my stash! So, off to a friends house, burn a lil THC and BAM!! I would remember what I had done with my stash.

I was in high school at the time, going to school high all day, all year. I was high when I took my advanced algebra final exam and aced it, sober when I took my biology final and failed miserably.

How does this all realte to cancer? It doesn't, I'm probably off topic, but I wanted to tell my little tale

Lol. I'm not a heavy user of weed, but I am partial to a bit every now and then, personally my academic results improved when I was using. I mean, I failed my GCSEs because I figured it was best to steer clear of the weed while I was revising and sitting the exams. Four years, and alot of hash, later and I'm in my second year of a Batchelor's degree. I've had to cut back recently though, mostly due to monetary constraints...

*Us govt covers eyes* I don't see you.

*Us govt covers ears* I don't hear you.

There is something to that dualism. I meditate on the stuff. I put a lot of effort into remembering things that i realised when on it when i am sober. I'm fairly good at it. Two worlds, almost. It's about focussing.

Ps, thanks for that, brother elsewhere.

Colorado, that's called "state dependent memory.

Were you stoned when you studied for these tests?

STUDY FOR TESTS?? I never had time to study anything secular when I was outside of the school environment. No way, I was way too busy "underlining my Watchtower or Revalations book" or preparing for a talk because sister so and so had some sudden onset illness and was not going to the meeting that week!

But seriously, yes, I was under the influence when I was learning the material. I did fail to mention what really struck me was the fact that my yearly average for Biology was WAY higher than Algebra. The score I recieved on the Bio final really hacked the teacher off! The whole "you weren't applying yourself" speech!
