Good eye. I mislabeled the subject title. This was the Bible Student convention "newspaper." --A JW publication for all intents and purposes.
I found this in the publication, "Jehovah's Witnesses Their Monuments To False Prophecy" by Edmund Gruss

Well, it is quite striking that a JW publication was so honest about the real purpose of Beth Sarim, that the genesis of the idea was due to Rutherford's poor health and habit of spending time in San Diego, and that the "princes" thing was post facto justification thought up by Rutherford, tho seriously the article takes this suggestion.

Forgive me, I'm kind of new to the history of the org.
What is this all about?
When Rutherford got out of jail I heard he had a lung condition due to pneumonia or something.
It makes sense to care for him, but buying a house for $100,000 in those days---wow.
With donated money..wow.
Does anyone know what happened to that venture and did they make money when it was sold?
I can imagine anyone owning and then selling R.E. in San Diego would make money.
The writer of the article is terrible! I did not even recognize the style of writing as being of Watchtower origins.
So there is going to be an expose on the telly about this early beginning in San Diego? -

Rutherford also had an estranged wife named Mary who lived in the Los Angeles area, but he instead lived in San Diego at Beth Sarim with Bonnie Boyd (just as he lived with her when he was at Bethel), and the Balkos (the housekeepers of Beth Sarim) who named their first-born daughter after her (Bonnie Balko).

What is this all about?"Beth Sarim" (House of the Princes) is something of an embarrasment today. It was claimed that the mansion was built to house the "ancient worthies" (Abraham, David etc.) who were shortly due to be resurrected. The building was even deeded to them.
Here's a typical example of the rhetoric concerning this building:

Isn't it funny? It's obvious that this is Joseph Rutherford's personal property. The pictures look typical of the rich and shameless in a Home and Garden magazine from any large city.
