I am not really a fan of Drew Carey, however, even he can see the plain truth!

I am a fan of Drew Carey and agree that it is nonsense to ignore the pagan roots of our holidays. That is why I embrace paganism and observe not Christmas but the Winter Solstice and Celtic Samhain instead of Halloween.

Sounds like old Drew was talking to a Witness. :-)

The thing is, the whole argument is based on a faulty premise. Sure, Christmas has nothing to do with the Bible. Who cares? Summer vacation has nothing to do with the Bible either, and yet you don't see any glum faces when June rolls around. Wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, wedding rings - none of that stuff has anything to do with the Bible. So the idea that "if it isn't in the Bible, we shouldn't be doing it" is totally bunk.

Actulally there is a difference between celebrating Easter, Christmas, Halloween, etc. than say Summer vacation, wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, wedding rings etc. The obvious differance is that the Easter, Christmas, Halloween holidays etc. are making a false pretence that they are ok practices for a professed Christan. Yeah, cause Easter is really about Christ's reserection! (Tell that to the Easter Bunny!) Oh and Christmas is really about Jesus' birth! (Santa Who?) And oh, Halloween it just fun and games let's all dress up like demons! (Need I say more!) What Fun!

The summer vacation is a pretty lame comparision! First of all some schools are year round and have different months off throughout the year. And it doesnt pretend to be a religion observance. Wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, wedding rings, are done differently depending on what country your from. Obviously they are not national holidays professing one thing and CLEARLY doing another.

Yeah. I agree. It isn't like wedding ceremonies profess that the UN is repugnant and then turn around and join the voice of the UN or anything. That was a good point!

I agree. It is hypocritical deceit you have to watch out for.

It only matters if you think there's a God who gives a flying ...hockey puck.

I don't understand how JWs can say observance of certain days are of pagan origan and, therefore, evil but other customs or practices with equally pagan origins are just fine and dandy.

Sorry, but the above comment makes no sense to me. You are either against pagan practices or you aren't.

Hee hee! "Passover Kangaroo"... I love Drew Carey, he's a fat, younger David Letterman.

And while I am in the "flying hockeypuck" camp, I have to agree with this:

You are either against pagan practices or you aren't.

Sure, I'll grant that. My point was that the argument that "if it has pagan (read: non-Christian) origins, it's bad" doesn't make sense.

I'm not religious, so I don't celebrate Easter. But I don't see anything devious about it. It's not as if anyone is trying to hide the origins. Just because there are people who don't know about them doesn't mean it's a conspiracy.

Besides, there are a lot of things in the gospel accounts themselves with "pagan origins." Take baptism, for example. John the Baptist shows up baptizing people. Did he just whip this idea up from nowhere? Of course not. It was a common practice in many religions. What that means is that Christianity adopted a religious idea from other religions and added their own particular significance to it. There's nothing devious about it - that's just the way religion works. It works with existing ideas and gives them a new spin.

    Here's a link about pre-Christian baptism practices:

I should mail this to Drew Carey. Maybe he'll start railing against baptism now. :-)

There's probably nothing wrong with Christmas or Easter -- it's when it gets wrapped up in Christianity that it becomes a problem -- that's the thing that offends me!

Adding Christ + Santa to the equation.

Adding Jesus' death + the Easter Bunny "" ""

It's like me walking down the street professing to be Christian but teaching from the Koran! It doesn't match!! If people loved the Bible so much, they wouuld ONLY talk about Jesus at the memorial at the time of Nisan and get rid of all this blatant materialism and paganism. People only like Christmas because it's money made easy for mega greedy capitalist shopkeepers!

Also even the pronunciation is dropped And Christ sounds like "Chris/Kris." From long "I" to short "I." (I know the reasons because it's always been the accepted way of talking in English to speed up the language and not worry about the syllables, yeah yeah... "mn" instead of "man" at the end of such last names like "Freeman.")

Wedding wings and (probably veils that women wear) on wedding day is pagan origin -- But people don't bat an eye lid at that! The days of the week...

But a wedding is nothing more than a procession for entering and registering up in marriage -- I don't know how they looked in the time of Jesus Christ but Jesus himself went to a wedding, remember!?

I don't remember this European looking guy with a thick bushy white beard who wears a red suit that looks about 60-70 years old having a good laugh with Jesus and Jesus making commandments saying things like "this is my friend, Santa Claus." "If you do not like him nor will I have any love in you nor will you get in the kingdom of God."

People should start talking about Jesus and cut down the Christmas trees.
