carm.org has this quote cited: "Thousands of the readers of Pastor Russell's writings believe that he filled the office of 'that faithful and wise servant,' and that his great work was giving to the household of faith meat in due season. His modesty and humility precluded him from openly claiming this title, but he admitted as much in private conversation." It is sourced as "Watchtower 12/1/1916, page. 357"

When you click on that link, you are taken to a page that shows this (in context with more of the article): Thousands of the readers of Pastor Russell's writings believe that he filled the office of "that faithful and wise servant," and that his great work was giving to the Household of Faith meat in due season. His modesty and humility precluded him from openly claiming this title, but he admitted as much in private conversation. For a more detailed account of his work, reference is made to THE WATCH TOWER of June 1st, 1916." But this is sourced as "Watchtower 12/1/1919, page 357"—which is right, 1916 or 1919?

I need to know so I can properly source a statement. Thanks in advance!

They probably said it in a few different places!

But as you can see in the scan, the one he picked was Oct.16, 1916.

I have a hard copy of Bible Students Watchtower reprints and this quote is word for word from the December 1, 1916 Watchtower. It's from the article titled, "Biography", and is located in the first paragraph under the paragraph heading "Harvest Work" on page 357. I did not read the June 1st article, nor did I look up the 1919 magazine. If you are looking for a positive source for the quoted text, the source I gave you is reliable.

Thanks, Legolas and GaryBuss! That was just what I needed.

For good or ill, you have helped me finish my work on the article Faithful and Discreet Slave.
