Maybe it's just me, but it seems like lot's of people have begun enunciating "str" as "schtr."

Almost as if they have a flattened tongue, that waggles back and forth in their (pardon me for my politically incorrect indiscretion) "Texan" jowls.

It happens all the time on CNN...golfballs in the mouth: "a schtrong hurricane."

Local channels in Oregon: "it's gonna be a schtrong storm tomorrow."

Bloomberg: "There's a schtrong upswing in oil prices."

Like, I'm looking for a really "schtrong nuculear blast" tomorrow.

Forgive me...I'm just a pronunciation freak. LOL

That's how I've always pronounced the consonant combination, tho sometimes it is sh + ch + r rather than s + ch + r. In the UK, some pronounce t + u as ch + u, as well.

LOL w/ Leolaia...why did I not doubt that you would come up with a debunking of my assertion?

Hmmmm..."debunking"...a particularly Franzian terminology, eh?...and hard to mispronounce!

So do you honestly don't pronounce "tree" as "chree"? You are oh so careful in your enunciation? ;)

OMG, a suspended double negative, with a hanging parabolic...just how can I describe your last?

    I'm so disappointed!

I'm wondering if its a way to keep their "s" sounds from becoming to hissy. Not sure, though. I'll have to go listen and see if I can hear it.

I lived in east and west Texas and didn't hear anyone pronounce str or shtr. Tom Brokaw has been doing that for years though. He was brought up in South Dakota. Maybe it's Tom's influence on broadcasting, that brings about the shtrs.

My husband has noticed the same thing. It doesn't sound right. I don't think anybody in this area pronounces tree as "chree".

I think the quality of speech on TV and radio has degraded substantially.

And I'm in central Texas. I would have to say that anomaly would certainly not be a "Texas thing". I always assumed it was more of a "Yank thing".
