The police have arrested a suspect in the arson fires of Kingdom Halls in Georgia. The suspect was first believed seeking revenge, but now they think the man has mental problems, since "voices" told him to do it..

I can almost see this scenario

Schizophrenic man stops taking his meds. Elders tell him to get to the meetings, pray more and got out in service. If he does that then he will be OK. They say nothing about him taking his meds.

Man hears the voices and knows exactly who to go after.

Seen this before (without this particular ending. The fellow I knew would beat up on his wife while the elders told her to stay with him and try to "help" him get to meetings

    Woodstock man arrested for arson

By NANCY SMALLWOOD and CRYSTAL LEDFORD
    Times regional staff

A 23-year-old Woodstock man has been charged with recent church arsons in Cobb and Forsyth counties.

Nathaniel Lombardo, who authorities say was their original suspect, faces one count each of second-degree arson, burglary and vandalism in connection with an Oct. 17 fire at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Doc Bramblett Road in Cumming.

Lombardo, who was arrested late Wednesday, is being held at a detention center in Cobb County, where he faces additional charges in connection with a fire at a Jehovah's Witnesses church in Acworth.

Church members identified Lombardo as the son of a couple who attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness on Doc Bramblett Road. Lombardo was not a member at either church, though he had attended both churches and church-sponsored Bible studies.

Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton said Lombardo was the primary suspect, but his motive may be different than first thought.

Instead of "revenge acts," Paxton said Lombardo's motive may have stemmed from a mental condition.

"He said he's hearing voices, voices telling him to do this," Paxton said.

The Forsyth County church sustained minor damage Oct. 17 after someone poured flammable liquid in the entranceway and part of the sanctuary. The accelerant burned the carpet but did not spread beyond where it had been poured.

Authorities think the flame-retardant carpeting may have saved the church.

Earlier the same morning, fire damaged the Jehovah's Witnesses church in Acworth, said Lt. Kevin Wallace of the Forsyth County Fire Department.

Authorities have forensic evidence they say links Lombardo to the case.

"(Cobb County authorities) found flammable liquid that was consistent with what was used and tools that matched with door damage of the churches in his truck and in his possession," Paxton said.

I wonder what happened to this poor guy that his mental state got to the point where he was hearing voices to allegedly cause him to act out his pain ?

As Lady Lee already pointed out, he's probably schizophrenic and stopped taking his meds.

At one time I would have believed that "Jehovah's spirit" protected the Hall... "flame-retardant" carpeting would have had nothing to do with it!
