Transmogrification

I heard this word tonight, and it struck a chord, insofar as the nature of the WTS has demonstrated itself so able to engage in such behavior.

In considering such synonyms as "alter, convert, modify, transfigure, transform, transmute," S.I. Hayakawa observes that "transmogrify, on the other hand, always stresses negative change, bizarre or ugly..."

As I think about that, this word most accurately describes what the WTS has done, decade after decade after decade. Rutherford seizes control from Russell, and transmogrifies the WTS into his little fiefdom. Knorr transmogriphizes the WTS into an incredibly centralized "organization' for distributing literature. Fred Franz trans-es the WTS into an end-times religion, with his own special imprimatur. Jaracz trans-es the WTS into a "beat-them-down-until-they-submit" organization, with all the bells and whistles of an Inquisition.

And the so-called "liberal" elements of the WTS sit back on their hands, hoping, waiting, wishing, that someone will do something to stop this continuing transmogrification. I've known many of those who could effect a change, if they so chose.

    So the monstrous evolution continues.

a lot of people like the catholic faith. and as far as religious eveolution goes, they're the most evolved form so far. well imagine that! a memetic organism so well adapted to it's environment!

There could be those that want change but somehow the basic spirit and attitude of this org never change and it carries on with the same destructive behaviour.

Could there be more controlling forces pulling strings from behind the scenes than just the GB and Ted Jaracz?

Greendawn, the force is inertia, a force of nature. The gears are grinding ever slower but the machine is so big, nobody remembers where the "off" switch is.

Onacruse, that's a good word. It fits them very well. We came across another word that we thought suited them. Ugsome, meaning: loathsome, disgusting.

Funny because when Craig told me about this word he heard and how it to him related to the WTS I had no idea what the word meant and we play this game (cuz he's Mr.Webster in my book) so I broke the word down like this: trans=move or change, mortification=ugly I said like a ogre, morgrify=I said something stupid like fee,fi,fo,fum......

He beamed I hardly ever get these words of his right but this one I did! He,hee I'm slowly learning but don't tell Craig it's because I play the Word Power in Reader's Digest.

Anyway we had our typical long discussion about how the WTS has morfed into this ugly monster of an Organization not too unlike other religious or political movements have done over the centuries.

I'm just so glad to be done with the WTS!

Not to make light of a serious topic, but that word for me will forever conjure up images from Calvin and Hobbs

    LOL @ TD!

    transmogrification is a new technology.

Craig will get a kick out of this cartoon!

Calvin and Hobbes - it's the first thing I thought of too.
