Excellent.
Dr. Thomas Hesse, president of Sony BMG's global digital business division, said the following on NPR:
"Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?"
"Sony digital boss - rootkit ignorance is bliss" http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/09/sony_drm_who_cares/

Here I've been following this situation as an interested, but disimpassioned neutral observer. --Not any more
This morning, my wife told me that her iTunes software was not working properly.
Guess what?
She had recently purchased a Neil Diamond CD (Yuck!) Apparently Sony owns Columbia and now I have this crap installed on a home computer.
To me, this is clearly a case where the cost of undoing the damage far exceeds what would be redressed by a refund of the purchase price.
I hope Sony learn from this, and stop trying to attack the casual filesharers and copiers, and go for the huge filesharing groups and CD pirates instead...
TD,
To see if you have the Sony BMG rootkit installed on your computer, create a file beginning with $sys$, like $sys$td.txt
The rootkit hides files beginning with $sys$, so if you cannot see the file you just created, the rootkit is installed.

Sophos has released software that will remove the "hiding" feature of the rootkit. Download it at this address. --VM44
Kudos to Sophos. I knew I liked the Brits!
