Hatha yoga is safe. I have heard that kundalini yoga is best avoided until you are more experienced. I also read of a yoga cult. I don't remember the details.

I haven't done real yoga in ages, but if you wanted to take actual classes, I'm sure you could google it to find out what's offered in your area. If you are looking for tapes, same thing. Research online and see who has tapes and what looks interesting to you. You could get a book, but I think its harder to get the positions right.
There's a yoga place right next to where I work, but I've never checked it out because she's rather expensive.

I LOVEEEE yoga.
My advice for what it's worth is to try them all. Read all about the different types and ask questions before and after class. Figure out what you would like to get out of it (more meditative or exercise or both). If you are a little fearful of just walking into a class then try out the DVDs first for a introduction. And most of all have fun!
Too bad you don't live around here ... I would go to your first class with you.

Try watching the various tv shows in the a.m. (or tape them) before you buy the tapes or sign up for expensive classes. They will give you an idea of what you like/don't like. That's my advice.
