Was just thinking about collaboratively writing a Reasoning book around common jw errors. Anyone feel like adding/fixing some of this up? What are some other common objections you've run up against?

    1914

Definition: belief that 1914 AD marked the end of the Gentile Times. blahblah.

    Chronology isn't that important.

If chronology isn't important then why can you be disfellowshipped for not accepting it? (allow for response) [Refer to Watchtower Apr 1, 1986 p.30-31 Questions From Readers]

Okay, so maybe it's 1934 instead of 1914, who cares?

1914 is used as the basis of authority for the Faithful & Discreet Slave. Should something so shaky be used as a basis for authority? (watch brains explode)

Well, thats according to secular evidence, but I will stick to the Bible.

Secular evidence and the Bible record are not at odds with one another. It is an interpretation of the 70 years that conflicts with

Thanks... let me know what you think. It would be fun to have a full book's worth of them. We could make a pdf :)

You mean, like a reasoning book for ex-JW's? Great idea. Someone said my elder-speak chart was set up like the reasoning book.

The full title would be "Reasoning with Jehovah's Witnesses". :)

I think it's a great idea. But, is it possible to reason with a JW?

I didn't want to argue from a scriptural (or strictly scriptural) point of view. Though I haven't read that book, I assumed that was what it was doing. Its arguing about things that I find a bit boring anyways, such as the Trinity. I guess I would have to really read it to take a look.

I was just thinking more about common topics like 1914, FDS & the last days and some of the very common arguments that come up again & again.

Is that what this book is? Can anyone comment who has read it?

Looking at both of those links, I get the impression that its arguing for a certain point of view. I was hoping to be able to argue against certain witness teachings in a non-leading way. Not attempting to teach something new, simply attempting to dismantle the old.

The book "Reasoning From the Scriptures with Jehovah's Witnesses" is more-or-less what you'd expect from a fundy-type christian guy thumping his bible in response to the JWs thumping of theirs. I read the book and it does contain a lot of good reference material and compares and contrasts JW teachings with what the bible (not a NWT) actually says. Of course he adds his fundy-christian take on things ( like the trinity) too.

If you're looking for technical and some subjective information, references and quotes, this book is good. If you are bored to tears by another religious discussion and "My bible is better than your bible" type book I'd say use your own discretion. Can't hurt.

It could be a good thing for those who are inclined to try to reason with them. Personally, I think I'd enjoy throwing them off my porch more, or perhaps turning the garden hose on them.
