Foul play likely in double-fatality in Yellowstone National Park

    By Marlo Pronovost

The horrific incident that took the lives of an Arizona man and his son in Yellowstone National Park seven weeks ago today may not have been an accident.

Park Investigator Brian Smith said this week there are three possible scenarios that could have caused 50-year-old Drew Speedie and his 13-year-old son Brent to fall off the bridge on September 16:

    1) An accident.

    2) Suicide.

    3) Homicide / suicide.

An accident caused by a third party - such as a passing car knocking the pair over the side of the bridge - has been ruled out.

"We are treating it like a homicide," Smith said. "We are getting closer to being able to determine what we believe happened."

More work lies ahead. Standard psychological profiles will be done, and there will be more interviewing of co-workers, friends and family members in Arizona, in order to collect as much information as possible.

Forensic evaluations of the Speedie computer are planned as well. Smith said his office is getting close to being able to determine what happened on that Friday morning.

Rangers were alerted to a problem at the bridge by an Asian man who flagged down a ranger at the Mammoth Chapel, located approximately 1.2 miles away.

The man did not speak English and the ranger was uncertain of what was being said, other than he needed to get to the bridge immediately.

The bridge is more than 800 feet long and 200 feet in height. It is flanked by railings that are about chest height, making the likelihood of someone slipping over the edge unlikely.
