when i was about 16 or 17, one of the elders in our congregation told my mom that he had it from ''special sources'' that the end was very near. so he said that him and a lot of other dubs were cashing in their retirement early and using it to buy new houses, cars, and to go on vacation. their reasoning was to spend the money now, since it would be useless when the new system arrived a few years later.

so the elder and his wife cashed in their retirement and used the profits to buy a new house and go on a cruise, which my mom and i also went on. i can't remember if my mother cashed in her retirement...i don't see how she could have since she didn't have a job perse. she was just on the payroll at my dad's store (she rode the gravy train after the divorce as long as she could). but somehow she afforded to go on a week long cruise...

that was 5 or 6 years ago...i wonder about those people sometimes...i'm sure that retirement is right around the corner for many of them. do you think they're starting to get worried? and what are they going to do when they do reach retirement, the end is still not here, and they have no money to live off of?

I understand that concept. I married in 1976 at age 18. The world as we knew it was coming to an end any day. We waited and waited. Worked our asses off actually. We did all of the right things, we put the kingdom first, we raised our kids the "right" way. We took out of our retirement fund proably three times over the years. Depleted it actually! When things got tough on our one income, we paid off debt and smuggly thought we didn't need it anyway! Oh, we were so superior as one other thread pointed out! We had "special" knowledge that the world didn't possess! Retirement? It is looming large! I am now a single woman reading books on how to retire. My nest egg needs to grow and grow quickly! At least I wised up and now have one!

I plan on moving to Honduras, Mexico or Guatemala. Even if I only receive the minimum from Social Secirity I can live pretty good down south. If Social Security is gone when that time arrives I can still live cheaper down south. All I need is access to electricity and a flowing water source.

I think that's a good idea. I know someone who moved to Mexico to retire, and they love it.

But don't you have to be a citizen to live there full time? And have some connections to the country to become a citizen?

Mexico - cross back over the border into the US once a month to buy groceries and it's no problem.

haven't yall read the scripture. jehovah's witnesses don't need money, the lord will provide daily, just like he takes care of the birds and the flowers.

Most of the JW’s I knew held on to their retirement and did not run up big debt. A very few did idiotic things, like cashing in retirement and running up big debts … but, they were by far, the minority. Maybe the ones that held on to retirement, etc –didn’t really swallow the Corporate “THINKING”. Maybe they simply went along with the dogma … just like many do now.

What retirement? You can't have a job that has benefits...you have to do something thal leaves time for the importaint things...you know, meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, studying with the fam one night per week, and studying for the Watchtower study...and then there's "personal study" and field service...and if you want to be anybody, you better be aux pioneering once in a while.

Washing windows and cleaning carpets...now THAT is a career with a real future...can we be grateful for such a fine provision?
