We cannot assume that all blood is yet being tested. For example, it is reported that by the start of 1989, about 80 percent of Brazil's blood banks were not under government control, nor were they testing for AIDS

I thought this was funny. This is from WTS website. Why not just say:

We cannot assume that all blood is yet being tested. For example, it is reported that by the start of 1800, 0 percent of Brazil's blood banks were not under government control, nor were they testing for AIDS.

I'm sure Brazil is still using these computers today also to test their blood:

Appalling, isn't it? Whatever could be misconstrued to support their point, they use. Everything else they disregard. Good way to bumble through life. Excepting of course for all the people they kill along the way...

    Pretty funny.

Also funny are the other assumptions being made:

For example, it is reported that by the start of 1989, about 80 percent of Brazil's blood banks were not under government control,

1> What does their being under "government control" have to do with anything?

2> Brazil? Brazil? Now, I know Brazil is not exactly really a third-world country, but what about England, the U.S., Canada, etc.? It seems likely that they found the 5-10% of the U.S. banks just didn't suit the particular point they were trying to make. (I have no idea about ths percentages here.)

*edit because I had the percentages flip-flopped... Gosh! Such an idiot....

From Timeline: A Brief History of AIDS/HIV.ÆGIS on www.aegis.com

    1985

    • The FDA (US) approves the first HIV antibody test. Blood products begin to be tested in the US and Japan.
    • The first International Conference on AIDS is held in Atlanta (US).
    • US President Ronald Reagan mentions the word "AIDS" in public for the first time in response to a reporters questions on September 17, 1985. See, also: Associated Press, Los Angeles Times
    • AmFAR is founded in Los Angeles.
    • The first AIDS-related play -- The Normal Heart, by Larry Kramer -- opens in New York.
    • Number of known deaths in US during 1985 -- 5636

    1989

    • Haiti stops distribution of tainted blood products.
    • FDA (US) approves pentamidine mist for use against PCP.
    • After two years of intense ACT UP protests over the price of its drug, AZT, Burroughs Wellcome lowers AZT's price by 20%.
    • Number of known deaths in US during 1989 -- 14,544.

You mean to tell me that FOUR YEARS after the US approved its first test for the HIV antibody, Brazil STILL wasn't testing its blood supply? Well, I certainly won't be accepting any pre-1990 blood from any Brazilian hospitals, I can tell you that much!

oh wow. That Tandy makes me feel O-L-D. Actually, it's funny. Every computer I've used over the last 20 years has had the same "rough" price point. Starting from an Apple IIe in 1986 (128K of RAM; no hard drive) to the 2.4 GHz laptop with 1GB of RAM I'm typing on this post today.
