A Special Tribute Part 4 (Final)

It only seemed fitting that K leave us being held in the arms of the person he was the closest to. He raised his head and looked up into the eyes of my youngest son, now 22, and feeling comforted took his last breath.

The hard part was to realize we had to go on living without our dear friend in our lives everyday. My son and I grabbed each other and sobbed and we kept holding and kissing K, trying to will our brains to remember how he felt to the touch of our hands. I especially remember holding him in my lap as a puppy, something he never outgrew. Just that day as I had sat on the floor he decided he wanted to sit in my lap…all 95 pounds.

We took him home and buried him in a beautiful field, knowing that he would like the openness and freedom it presented. My 2 sons and I spoke about what K had meant to each one of us during a candlelight ceremony. We all put something special inside for him to remember us by.

None of us could seem to get over the empty spot now in our lives and when I saw my 2 grown sons grab each other and sob uncontrollably, I knew I had to do something drastic. It was the week before Christmas and I thought about doing something that would help the world out just a little. I asked my oldest son to go to the dog pound with me, just to look and see if there were any puppies that desperately needed a home. We walked in and immediately found one that caught our attention. We called my other son to come check him out and as soon as he was in his arms, there was no letting go.

No dog will ever replace K and we didn’t want to try to do that. Instead we opted to help the community and in doing so we are reaping the rewards. This puppy doesn’t have papers and doesn’t come from a royal bloodline, but he’s a great dog, too. He brought laughter back in the home, something K was always fond of.

K taught us some wonderful lessons in life…the greatest of these being unconditional love. He will forever live on in our memory.

    The end

P.S. Here is picture of our new family member:

A lovely tribute and a touching story. Those of us who have or had pets, know only too well the feeling of unconditional love they give us as well as we know the gutwrenching pain we suffer when we lose them. Thanks for sharing.

Sammie...so sorry for your loss!!! It really is like losing a family member.

What's sad to me is that he reminded me of my husband sometimes, personality wise, and they both died of cancer! Is that weird? For some odd reason his death was another closure with my ex. It's hard to put into words...anyway, it brought back painful memories as well as created fresh ones.

What a sweet baby! I'm sorry for your loss, Swalker, I always enjoy seeing your avatar, cute dog. One thing about dogs, no two are the same kind of like kids, so they can't replace your loss, but they can help you heal. They are so cute when they are young they just make you laugh in spite of yourself sometimes.

Thanks Gretchen! He is so cute and so different from my other lab! He does some of the cutest and funniest things and you can't help but laugh! He is a handful and wants to play constantly. Also, I'm not used to a black dog...I could see always find my other dog, even at night, but this one is like a shadow...his eyes glow green in the night! We named him Neo, after the Matrix character....and he's already doing back flips, so I think he's got the right name!

Enjoy Neo - he's a beauty. I've had 3 other dogs before my last one - she was a husky - but she was somehow special and I have had a harder time getting over losing her than the others. Some day when I'm settled again I would like another dog but I'd be happy with a cat too!

    Hugs and kisses for Neo......
