A Special Tribute Part 4 (Final)
It only seemed fitting that K leave us being held in the arms of the person he was the closest to. He raised his head and looked up into the eyes of my youngest son, now 22, and feeling comforted took his last breath.
The hard part was to realize we had to go on living without our dear friend in our lives everyday. My son and I grabbed each other and sobbed and we kept holding and kissing K, trying to will our brains to remember how he felt to the touch of our hands. I especially remember holding him in my lap as a puppy, something he never outgrew. Just that day as I had sat on the floor he decided he wanted to sit in my lap…all 95 pounds.
We took him home and buried him in a beautiful field, knowing that he would like the openness and freedom it presented. My 2 sons and I spoke about what K had meant to each one of us during a candlelight ceremony. We all put something special inside for him to remember us by.
None of us could seem to get over the empty spot now in our lives and when I saw my 2 grown sons grab each other and sob uncontrollably, I knew I had to do something drastic. It was the week before Christmas and I thought about doing something that would help the world out just a little. I asked my oldest son to go to the dog pound with me, just to look and see if there were any puppies that desperately needed a home. We walked in and immediately found one that caught our attention. We called my other son to come check him out and as soon as he was in his arms, there was no letting go.
No dog will ever replace K and we didn’t want to try to do that. Instead we opted to help the community and in doing so we are reaping the rewards. This puppy doesn’t have papers and doesn’t come from a royal bloodline, but he’s a great dog, too. He brought laughter back in the home, something K was always fond of.
K taught us some wonderful lessons in life…the greatest of these being unconditional love. He will forever live on in our memory.
