If I consider for a moment that god exists, he would be an all-powerful intellect wouldn’t he, so he would have created man with the same intellectual qualities as stated in Genesis 1:26 wouldn't he?

Why then, would religions or a religion that 'represents' him here on earth try to limit the use of that intellect? Why such a fear of “independent thinking”?!?!?! After all as a creator of mind he would have created the rules according to which we perceive logic and deduct what is true and what is false, which would also set the limits of what is normal and what is a fantasy. In other words majority of people would be able to see the truth with their own minds. There would of course be an odd apple here and there who would prefer fantasy over the truth, but vast majority would be able to see what is true or not simply because that would be a representation of how their brain as healthy organ functions.

I’d appreciate everyone's thoughts, particularly those of you who are believers.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. ~1 Cor 1:18,21

This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. ~Eph 4:17-19

But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. ~2 Cor 4:3-6

Men do not see the truth because they love the darkness more than the light (read Romans 1:18-32). Living for Jesus means denying yourself. Most people love their own lives (even their sin) so much and would rather do their own thing, that giving it all up would not only be unthinkable, but seems impossible. If men would only see what it is that they are throwing away. And for what? Worldly pleasure that lasts a moment in contrast to eternity with the Creator.

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” ~Jn 3:19-21

Genesis 1:26 says "Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” "

Nowhere in Gen 1:26 does it say that man was to be made to have the mind of God - with an all-powerful intellect. It only says that man was man in His image, according to His likeness. Because we are not all-knowing, wise or powerful does not nullify the fact that God exists. The Scriptures say that all creation testifies concerning His being. We are without excuse.

In other words majority of people would be able to see the truth with their own minds. [PART2]

Actually, it is only by God who unveils Himself to the seeker that they see the light. That's why it is called grace. If you seek Him, He will be found. Knock and the door will be opened. Ask and it shall be given. Only God can change the heart of a man and God draws near to Himself those He chooses.

I think you already know the answer to that. The con game called religion falls apart if you think about it too clearly.

Come, bask in the light of atheism with us.

First of all, I've never been a dub (just to give you perspective) and I believe in an all-loving, all-knowing Creator.

Why indeed - you bring up a good point, one that clarifies to whether or not a religion truly 'represents' Him. (how could it, it would go against His creation)

I think most of what confounds people about who and what God is, is due to mankind's creation of God rather than the reality (not one and the same). People are always questioning "why does He allow this to happen", "why doesn't He do that", blah blah blah... it's like trying to figure out the game of baseball using a football playbook - sure, they're both sports, but you can't use one to entirely understand the other.

I think the scriptures have their place and among them are the greatest treasures that can be found (along with the most confusing statements made by men). Having said that, I agree with you regarding our God-given intellect. Long before any scriptures were written and available, a person's intellect served them on their journey through life in the search for truth and meaning. I think throughout life, people connect, one way or another to the Creator - the difficulty is in staying connected and not being discouraged. Ultimately, I believe we will all find out what this journey means and we will all be pleasantly surprised.
