Is another Global Cataclysm overdue?

No matter what religion or era, the human race has always been obsessed with an 'impending Armageddon, or Cataclysm' of such proportions, that only a few will survive.

It is thought by some 'thinkers' and 'authors' that this is because of cataclysms that occurred thousands upon thousands of years ago that wiped out our technologically advanced ancestors.

Is religions' obsession with another huge cataclymic event, an inevitablility, such as meteor strike or earth crust displacements causing multiple Tsunami, the Armageddon that is the inevitable interruption to another human civilisation? A global pandemic could wipe out billions of people. These possible events are now actual scientific possibilities that some see parallel with religious prophecys, including Christianity's 'second coming' and small tribes of indiginous peoples who also expect global disaster, always in the future.

We all now accept that it is a slim possibility that the Earth will be hit by comets, or that Earth crust movements, and even cataclysmic global warming will happen.

Are we so technologically advanced now that we could survive NEARLY anything or are we doomed if our intelligencia are wiped out by a global plague or other cataclysm?

After beginning to struggle free from the superstition that is religion, will we be thrown back into the 'dark ages' of human technology and lack of freedom of thought that is religious fundamentalism which has held back human advances for generations?

I think that it's cyclic. Earthquakes, pandemics, whatever comes back at a certain frequency throughout history. Ice ages, and so on, come and go.

But if these events come once per 1000 years or million years, we can still live a full life without anything happening.

JH - Would you feel so relaxed about it if it was imminent though? Imminent, as in a few years or so?

The smart money is going with "ice age" within 5 million years.
