The following words are all attributed to Jesus, and said to 'wayward' Christians:

"Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will FIGHT AGAINST them with the LONG SWORD of my mouth.' ( Rev 2:16 )

"And I will KILL HER CHILDREN WITH DEATH; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searches the reins and the hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works." ( Rev 2:23 )

"So then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will SPUE THEE OUT OF MY MOUTH." ( Rev 3:16 )

Scout...Please understand that I am not a Christian but I love much of what Jesus taught.

The Book of Revelation is comparable to Nostrodamius's writings. I don't think that it is fair to attribute those words to Jesus. Obviously many do but I can't imagine those words coming out of Jesus' mouth.

Wombastard....you took the exact words right outta Gumbys little mouth!

As you say, Revelation speaks badly for Jesus and does him no justice unlike the gospels that supposedly contain his words. Yes, the words in Revelation are ALSO said to be his words, but they do not rhyme with the personality of the Jesus of the gospels.

Keep in mind, Revelation was thrown out of the canon many times and was so controversial it took till the 4th century BEFORE it became part of the canon we are familiar with today.

It's obvious the book was written by a disgruntled Jew who was opposing Rome and hoping for deliverance through his messiah who didn't return to save his people as he said he would.

Let us not forget that the book of Revelations is a collection of "signs". To apply anything from Revelations as literal is to go beyond the intent of scripture. It's always the nutcases who turn to Revelations in an attempt to prove themselves correct.

Hey Gumby... Imagine if Revelation was kept out of the canon...

Wouldn't Christianity have been a much less confrontional faith?

I reckon that Paul was a lobbyist for the hat and scarf manufacturers.

Jesus is a historical person and, in my mind, a very holy man. Gee, he's been stuffed up by lots of people jumping on his band wagon and pushing their own rubbish.

I don't know why it would. If revelations were not there, you'd still have the teaching that unless mankind accepts Jesus......he has no way to god since jesus said HE was the way,HE was the light, and that anyone who tried to get to the father past him is a robber.

He said those who denied him would gnash their teeth and weep upon his arrival. HE said most people are headed for destruction and few will find life( see narrow/broad road illustration) He said he would oneday come and seperate people and those who don't ACCEPT him will be burned/disposed of like chaff. He is the vine and anyone who doesn't belong to him will be cut off the vine like the fig tree that produced no fruit.

Revelation is only a small part of the canon that detracts from god and seperates people by it's bigotry toward those who deny it's validity.

Wombat: Believe it or not, but, I too 'love much of what Jesus ( is said ) to have taught'.

You say that you don't think it is fair to attribute the words of the above texts to Jesus. Do you think it is fair to attribute the following words from Revelation, to Jesus?:

To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God." ( Rev 2:7b )

"Because thou hast kept the word of my my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which will come upon all the world." ( Rev 3:10 )

"Behold I stand at the door and knock; If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come into him, and will sup with him, and he with me." ( Rev 3:20 )

My reason for quoting these 'nice' words, attributed to Jesus, is that they demonstrate how the Bible contains many texts that portray Jesus ( and Jehovah ) as being a VERY appealing character, WHILST ALSO ( even within the same book of the Bible ) containing many other texts that portray Jesus ( and Jehovah ) as a VERY UNappealing character.

As Gumby points out, this tension between 'nice' Jesus, and 'nasty' Jesus, is not just to be found within the book of Revelation. It is also to be found within the other books of the NT.

In one of my classes, I was surprised to learn that the Book of Revelation came within a hairs breath of NOT being included as part of the NT----it was considered too controversial. Too bad they didn't discard the damn thing. Can you imagine the difference it would've made in the life of a JW? No more 2-class system, cause there'd be no "144,000" doctrine, the whole thing about 1260 days, the "two dead witnesses in the street" and all the other crap that they interpret as part of the Organization at the turn of the 20th century........

It's obvious the book was written by a disgruntled Jew who was opposing Rome and hoping for deliverance through his messiah who didn't return to save his people as he said he would.

Actually, I think it was a combination of John suffering from persecution (which would have involved physical beatings, food depravations and sleep depravation and god knows what else) which could have induced hallucinations. Plus, there were and still are, magic mushrooms growing on the Island of Patmos and John almost certainy would have no idea what they could do. Imagine a zealous Christian, being persecuted in the above manner, thrown onto an island where he was isolated from the world. He eats some of the mushrooms and he starts seeing all these "wonderful signs" that make no damn sense whatsoever, but he's fascinated and writes it all down and the rest is history. Personally I think John was stoned out of his mind when he wrote Revelation.......

Oh, my... you've not been to many churches have you?

When I was a JW I was also taught churches never use the name Jehovah. The very first church service I ever went to they used the name all through the sermon. Hmmm wonder what that showed me????
