The National Geographic Channel is presenting a brand new documentary tonight about the findings of the "Gospel of Judas"

Now a few years back - my brother (ex-elder, df'd, and self-proclaimed apostate)presented me with the possibility that maybe the portrayal of Judas was wrong. Maybe the role he played was not of a traitor but of someone who made the sacrifice of doing the dirty work that Jesus needed in order to get "the ball rolling" -sort of speak- for certain events to happen.

After 15 years of the Nat Geo authenticating this finding they finally unveiled their findings of this "gospel of Judas" and they are presenting their findings.

At the very least it should be amazingly interesting. I'm definitely watching.

the book of judas has been around all along. and i think you can read it online but the amazing thing about this document is that it is authenticated as coming from 1800 years ago.

Its on right now (it started an hour ago) and for the life of me I could just not get into it. Maybe it is just my mood today, but they can't seem to get to the point. WHAT DOES THE GOSPEL OF JUDAS SAY?!?!? They are going about the history and what happened and what some believe, etc. I just want to know what it says. Annoying. Maybe I will watch the last 10 minutes.

It kind of makes sense, doesn't it?

If Judas hadn't betrayed Jesus, then Jesus would never have been the sacrifice he was meant to be. In betraying Jesus, Judas was helping him to fulfill his destiny, and fulfill the prophecies concerning him. And for helping Jesus (and mankind, by extension) in this manner, he gets blacklisted for all eternity??? That hardly seems fair, does it?

It wouldn't surprise me if Jesus and Judas hatched a plot. It would be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Or, what if the leaders of the fledging church decided after several decades had passed after the crucification, that someone had to take the blame.

    Just my two cents,

I have a genuine interest in biblical history/archaeology and I plan on devouring the info about the Book of Judas. However, I do not automatically believe that this proves one way or another what really happened 2,000 years ago. First of all, from what I understand, these writings are about 1800 years old. In other words, they were written about 200 years after Jesus died. There have been other writings from this time period that are highly suspect, such as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas which describes Jesus as the First Century equivalent of Bart Simpson and who murders a fellow playmate and another child for merely bumping into him in the Marketplace. There are other writings too of this time, some of which The Da Vinci Code is based on.

My point is: these writings are at least 200 years after the actual events and it's fair to say that they could be distorted somewhat. I would also suggest that this Book of Judas could have been written by Judas' descendants (assuming he was married and had children---the bible doesn't say), in an attempt to 'clear his name'. We see the same thing happen today. For example, the descendants of Bruce Ismay have gone out of their way to try and 'clear his name' as being the cause of the Titanic disaster. Both written books and the movies show that it was Bruce Ismay who "encouraged" the Captain to put the ship to top speed which of course, caused the collision. Bruce Ismay lived in disgrace for the rest of his life. It's only natural that a family does not want that sort of infamy, and so they can resort to trying to 're-write history' to shift the blame elsewhere.

So I don't think it's beyond the scope of reason that the Book of Judas could be doing such a thing. Can you imagine if you were a child or grandchild of Judas Iscariot having to live with the knowledge that a relative of yours betrayed the Son of God and caused his death? Who would want to live with that given how judgemental people are.

    Just my two cents worth.....
