What charities and clubs do you enjoy NOW, that you could not before?

I couldn't help but notice how one of my JW friends always shows interest in some of the things we are involved with. My husband is the leader of a boy's club at our church, we have study groups on books of the Bible (using the Bible only, no guides or other books), we donate gifts to children in our area and abroad, we support Wycliff Bible translators and personally have friends that are in remote areas of the world translating Bibles into languages that are unknown to most of the world, we try to help in any area that we feel led by the Lord.

I asked our JW friend why he doesn't approach his congregation or elders and ask if he could start an out-reach for kids. He seems to have a heart and desire to help kids. He looked at me like I lost my mind. Too busy doing the door-to-door thing and having book studies. Something that I can see he does not really have a heart for at all.

What charities and efforts do YOU have a heart for? What things are you excited about helping with, that interest you and bring joy to YOUR heart? What are the things that you can do now, that you were forbidden to do then? Was there a time that you had a chance to do something very meaningful, but you felt you were not allowed to, and passed it up? How do you witness for Christ now?

When 1975 didnt bring an end to this system I started thinking I need a job that pays better plus I had 3 surgeries during that time but as soon as I was well I tried getting on at Phone co. The last time I stepped foot in a kingdom hall was after I started work. This JW said to me you cannot work at phone co. you wont be able to go to meetings. I said when the JWS buy tires for my car help with my expenses and pay auto insurance for me which they are not going to do dont tell me I cannot work for phone co. I walked out and never went back. Anyway back to the subject I now had extra money to donate to charities. I am for kids and animals so I donated to childhelp for abused children, I also gave to Greenpeace, and animal shelters. Now that I am on fixed income I put money in at stores for different causes and now that I go to church I give there too. Also buy girl scout cookies and also candy. I also give a little to elephant place in Tenn. for abused circus elephants I just love elephants.Giving makes me feel better even if its only a dollar. Every little bit helps Love audrey

I enjoy going to the YMCA.

I also help at work every Christmas getting donations for poor families so that the childrend can have presents on Christmas morning.

My time: I got involved in 4H (living vicariously through my daughter) and was a leader for 13 years. Ditto for a Boy Scouts program called Venturing (coed, older kids, leadership and high adventure trips).

My money: church, community food pantry, Christian Children's fund, Humane Society, 4H, International Myeloma Foundation, American Porphyria Foundation......

Ironic: If I buy them, my JW parents LOVE girl scout cookies! And they don't realize how much church bake sale food I have fed them over the years!

I've done alot of work with the red cross. Back in 95 I was on their diaster team that helped at the OK city bombing. I used to do alot of blood drives, too. I have also help set up womens abuse hotlines in texas, and helped in shelters.

Chicago Legal Clinic - provides low cost legal and in some cases will do pro bono work for the elderly, misplaced or other less fortunate ones. This is set up thru Catholic Charities. I work with Cardinal Fances George from time to time. Who, by the way, is a very nice man and very funny!

Sarah's Inn - domestic violence center for women and children.

Red Cross - various drives through out the metropolitan area

Some smaller catholic charties as well, but those are only catch as catch can, so I don't know that I would count them as a regular on my plate.

I'm establishing a charity for people with bleeding disorders, which I would not have done as a JW since the most common treatments involve blood fractions.

I dive on river cleanups it's fun challenging and usually on sunday morning! I donate blood (cause the blood chick is a hottie! My little vampire hottie friend!) I've wired two houses for habitat for humanity! Done some sound and light work for a local church... Thinking about volunteering in a homeless shelter a bit... Dunno we'll see!

As to the witnesses if you have time to donate and don't feel like doing service then your time should somehow result in money in their pocket! Build a KH or ASSembly hall! Go rebuild a witnesses house just make sure that they file the claim with their homeowners insurance and give us the ENTIRE check (anninyas and safara anyone! Yes I know I spelled that wrong guess what? Don't care!) anyway you get what I'm saying...
