Posted May 13, 2006 Annual Jehovah's Witnesses convention offers 'deliverance'

Public sessions begin May 26 at the Resch

    By Jean Peerenboom [email protected]

"Deliverance at Hand" is the theme for the Jehovah's Witnesses district convention May 26 to 28 at the Resch Center.

Serving parts of Wisconsin, Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, the convention opens the season for district meetings throughout the United States. Nearly 11 million people attended the 2,981 district conventions last year.

The local convention begins each day at 9:30 a.m. The topics and events include:

  • May 26: "Be Attentive to Jehovah's Promises of Deliverance" and "How Jehovah Delivers 'the Poor One Crying for Help'" in the morning. The keynote address will be "Jehovah's Provisions for Our Everlasting Deliverance." The afternoon session's topics are "Jehovah Tenderly Cares for Older Ones," "Deliverance From Painful Distress" and "The Role of Angels in Rendering Public Service." The four-part symposium "Jehovah-Provider of Escape" precedes the session's final discourse "No Opposing Weapon or Tongue Will Succeed."

  • May 27: "Continue in the Ministry Without Letup" opens the morning. Other talks are "Delivered From the Trap of the Birdcatcher" and "Searching Into the Deep Things of God."

The Saturday morning program concludes with a talk followed by baptism in water for those who qualify.

The afternoon sessions are "Keep a Scriptural View of Health Care," "What Spirit Dominates Your Life?" "Maintain a Threefold Cord in Marriage," "Young People, Remember, Now, Your Grand Creator" and "Are You Living with Jehovah's Day in Mind?"

  • May 28: The morning symposium is "The Kingdom of the Heavens is Like …" Four talks briefly discuss some of Jesus' parables. The final morning talk will introduce a convention highlight, the full-costume drama based on Chpter 13 of the Bible book of First Kings. The final convention session is "Deliverance by God's Kingdom Is at Hand."

All sessions are open to the public. There are no admission fees and no collections are taken, according to the organizers.

The Jehovah's Witnesses religion is based on first-century Christianity, according to James Senger, city overseer in Green Bay. Participants are serious students of the Bible. Unlike some Christian faiths, they do not recognize the Trinity. Instead, Jehovah is the father, so named because that is the name given as God's personal name in the Bible. Jesus is his firstborn son. The Holy Spirit is not a person; it is God's active force. As in other Christian religions, Jesus is central to their future and their worship.

Stewardship of the land is a vital issue. Members are family-oriented and pro-education. Members do not pledge allegiance to any nation and therefore do not salute the flag. They also don't celebrate most holidays that other Christians observe. The Easter season is very important, but their emphasis is on Good Friday, the day Jesus died. This is because the traditions surrounding Christmas and Easter came into play later than the first century.

Locally, the international organization has close to 1,000 members in Green Bay and De Pere. They are divided into six congregations, one of which is a Spanish-speaking group, at three Kingdom Halls. Their signature ministry is a door-to-door campaign, where they offer free literature published by Watchtower Bible Society.

The publications are the Watchtower and Awake! Watchtower prints 27 million copies in 183 languages. Awake! prints 32 million copies in 81 languages.

Worldwide, Jehovah's Witnesses have 6.6 million members in 98,269 congregations. In the United States, there are about 1 million members in 12,261 congregations.

For information, see the organization's official Web site at www.watchtower.org.

    Let's clarify those words.

FAMILY ORIENTED: If you don't want your butt in a sling you'd better be at mtgs., in service, etc. etc. And the whole family should be together doing these good works. And everyone needs relaxation, but when you are on vacation don't take a break away from Jehovah. Attend the mtgs. and perhaps have a share in fld. service. Never mind that there are other ways to teach kids about Jehovah. (Those are my words.)

PRO EDUCATION: Education w/5 weekly mtgs. w/WT org. publications and be sure to bring your WT Bible. Study for ALL mtgs. and include your little ones so they can have a part. Make sure your 2 yr. old has his own mags. and books. And have those little ones pay attention!!!! Are you doing your God-given job parents???? yada yada yada..........

In other words, oh ya, lets throw some stuff in about Jesus.

Am I the only one who is guessing they may be speculating a new date at this convention? Lots of stuff about deliverance n' shit. Or maybe they're just trying to boost the hope of all the drones by talking about deliverance n' shit.

I'm getting the feeling that there's going to be something more to this convention than a crappy tract and colorful invitations.

Letter writing opportunity. Here is the one I wrote. Anyone is free to use whatever parts they wish in their own letter--just be sure to remove paragraph 2 because that refers to only my own experience.

    Dear M. Peerenboom:

I read your article at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060513/GPG0406/605130571/1250 and was shocked to see that Jehovah’s Witnesses portrayed themselves to the author as “pro-education”. That is actually far from being accurate. This group has misled media in the past regarding many aspects of their beliefs in an attempt to gain positive publicity. Please do a follow up story regarding the erroneous information given to the reporter and the motives for misleading the media.

As a child, I was forced to join the religion and was prevented from attending college. I was grounded and supervised on the day college entrance exams were offered in order to prevent me from being eligible to apply for college. I was not allowed to enroll in high school college preparation classes—again to make it difficult for me to enter college. I was instructed to get only a part time minimum wage job and work full time in the door-to-door ministry, or be thrown out of my mother’s home and become homeless. All of this was done so as to prevent higher education. My experience is similar to that of many JWs.

Here are some facts and links about Jehovah’s Witnesses and education:

    · Video and audio of Jehovah’s Witness elders repeatedly stating higher education is dangerous to one’s relationship with God, and disfellowshipping a person for asking too many questions

    · Lack of Value of a Higher Education

    · A Survival Story on Education

    · Scan of Watchtower magazine discouraging higher education

    · More quotes from Watchtower literature discouraging higher education

    Members are family-oriented and pro-education.

That is a half-truth at best. The Watchtower Society is AGAINST University Education but PRO-Watchtower Education.

Yet another example of "Theocratic Warfare".

I know that many of you Aposta-Cheeseheads think that time commences and ends with the Green Bay Packers. However, you must write letters to counter the happy gas that the WTB&TS's PR department puts out there.

I am glad rebel8 did his job, however wouldn't letters from locals carry more weight with the editors? Come on cheeseheads, do your duty, and send letters to the newspaper so that they get the message.

This is a time to "advertise, advertise, advertise" the fraud that is the WTB&TS.
