Are you Possessed?

Warning: though this is very long if you read as much as you can it may lead to some interesting conversation.

Seriously, in my battle with good and evil in my life I have come to the conclusion that I am not meant to "know God" and that I was possessed sometime in my early life(ok not Exorcist possessed but just possessed meaning "I'm not meant to get it/cut off from God")EXAMPLES (yes, I realize these are only fictional portrayls but they show what I mean):

    1) There is an older movie called THE RAPTURE. It stars David Duchovny(pre X-Files days)& Mimi Rogers(an occasional X-File charachter) Anyhow she's the main character and it's about this:

    An audacious film about faith, The Rapture is a contemporary fantasy that keeps its feet unnervingly planted in reality even as reality starts to collapse. Mimi Rogers, in a strikingly accomplished performance, stars as Sharon, a telephone operator who spends her off-hours engaging in casual group sex to blot out her boredom. By chance, she becomes aware of a small Christian sect whose members believe that they have found a child with the gift of prophecy who has seen the upcoming end times. Slowly but steadily, Sharon finds herself drawn to this group, and one night she abruptly turns a corner, renounces her old life, and embraces fundamentalism with passion. She marries one of her former lovers, Randy (David Duchovny), who takes up Sharon's evangelical fervor to atone for his past as a hired killer, and they have a daughter. All seems peaceful until Randy is unexpectedly murdered, and Sharon takes her child to the desert to await the rapture that will bring the chosen to heaven. The film neither supports nor scoffs at Sharon's views, and the superb performances add immeasurably to a film that presents the unbelievable (and unthinkable) at face value, making it seem oddly plausible in the process. Michael Tolkin has also written and/or directed such films as The Player (1992), directed by Robert Altman, and The New Age (1994), both of which also skewer contemporary American society as shallow, materialistic, and desperate for something authentic to believe in. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide < http://www.blockbuster.com/img/var/spacer.gif>;

In the end Sharon loses. Despite her newfound faith she did not measure up and ends up in her own hell. I'm convinced I am like Sharon. The reason I am so drawn to this movie is because at first Sharon just doesn't get it. All these people are seeing this vision and believe it with all their hearts and it just won't come to her. I've felt like that my whole life. I've asked so many times why can't I just believe????

    2) The Stand(which I'm sure all you Stephen King fans know this one) which also includes a charachter of this nature: Destined/Chosen to go to hell even though she's was not a bad person by nature.

. . gripping epic of good versus evil chronicles the episodic adventures of a disparate group of people who struggle to reestablish civilization after a man-made catastrophe wipes out most of the world's population. The world abruptly ends when a deadly virus accidentally escapes from a government sponsored biological warfare laboratory. Soon people are dropping like flies from the plague, but a few survive and find themselves strangely compelled to head into the West. Good-hearted people follow the voice of an ancient black woman and head for Boulder, Colorado. Bad people follow the enigmatic Walkin' Dude to Las Vegas. It is only a matter of time before the two sides are forced into a climactic battle over the final fate of humanity. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The charachter in this story named Nadine is chosen at an earlier time in her life by the Walkin Dude to be his bride. She hence, remained a virgin for him until he would come for her. Even though she loved a "good guy" she finally gave in to the Walkin Dude who got her pregnant & she ended up killing herself and she knew she was on her way to hell. The thing that I thought stunk for her was that she didn't seem to have alot of choice in the matter. She was not bad yet she was just not chosen to be one of the "good guys".

Surely there are other people on this board who have struggled with this and if so inquiring mind wants to know. . . .

    Peacepipe,
*sigh* sweety, sweety, sweety--you admit to having watched Rapture? I'm kidding! I'm sorry.
I watched it (we actually own it) My husband, knowing my fundy past insisted I watch it. We got something totally different out of that film. Of course, bear in mind that my belief system which colors my interpretation is quite different. If I'd seen it as a JW, then my take on it might be totally different.
What I saw was a woman who, instead of failing some "divine commission" chose her humanness over what this blood thirsty god had to offer. SHE KILLED HER CHILD--just like Abraham was supposedly ready to do. In the end, she was glad to remain in limbo, versus, spending eternity with a god who basically demanded this of her. Anyway, I LOVE DAVID DUCHOVNY. hahahaha!!!
The universe, if you look at it objectively is not neatly divided into GOOD/EVIL. Look at nature. It's all about balance. You're not evil, and you're not possessed. I understand where you're coming from. It's because of what we're taught. I remember telling my mother as a young teenager that I was one of the fish that the angels kept throwing overboard. Not sure what the society teaches nowadays, but in those, (not THAT long ago! ;) that there were certain people that as the witnesses "fished in" the angels kept throwing overboard (there's a scripture). Meaning some just are not worthy of life. Now, don't you for one minute believe THAT! If you need to be a Jehovah's Witness, don't let ANYONE tell you or make you feel that you are unworthy.
I myself, am glad to know what I know now about nature, the universe, "god", if you will. I now see the glass as half full, instead of half empthy. I have peace.
Blessings on your journey, wherever it takes you.

keep us informed if you start spitting up pea soup and your head
spins 360 degrees. But I can relate to being a fish thrown overboard
because Jesus said that the salt that loses it's stregnth is cast
out and trodden on by men.Although I practice no religion I have
read the bible .It does say that god is the judge of all. There
is not much we can do as we play pawns in this game Good vs.
evil our eternal fate is not ours to determine.I did find this
post a very topical one .I just wonder how many people feel the
way you do.The bible can give people a guilt complex that's why
so many people have used it for personal gain.I never saw The Rapture
movie but I am a big fan of Stephen King and have seen the Tv special
and also read the book The Stand. It is funny how there often seems to
be parallels to hunanity caught up in a plot that is completely
overwelming. To thine ownself be true is one philosophy to live by.

Perhaps you are feeling that "you are not meant to know god" because a part of your mind knows that there is no god to "know".

Please don't base your self-image on "teachings" taken from Hollywood movies or self-annointed metaphysicians.

If you are not meant to know god, and you know it, you are in a far better position than the majority of people who insist on living their lives to obtain the approval of an imaginary creature.

I wish you success and happiness and the fulfilling of your potentials and desires.

    Peacepipe,

I'm with Nathan Natas on this one. I'm a theist -- from personal experience -- but my personal take on it is that god created atheists to keep the rest of us honest.

You can't force belief, because you're just lying to yourself, and you can't make good religion out of that. We ex-jaydubs know this from experience.

Salvation isn't an issue. There's no compelling reason to believe you'll go to hell if you don't "get it", is there? That would be both wasteful and immoral on god's part.

I don't know that "seeking god" is actually of any use. If god wants you so much, can't she just come and get you herself? Make her do some of the work.

A god that needs people to stick up for him because of some bit of hanky-panky that satan did is a wimp. Should a parent depend on it's kids to redeem it?

Actually, my theory is that each one of us contain a 'spark' of 'god' similar to the claims made by jesus. The spark and knowlege of it has been in the process of being hidden since our birth. If this is true, then each of us have an intrinsic value that is undiminished no matter what we do or believe. Try viewing others as also having this 'divine' value for one day and the whole world changes before your eyes.

    Hi all!

Fredhall: I could send you some Advantage-once a month flea treatment incase you didn't know.(it works on my cats) or if you wanted a know a chiropractor who works on animals (I'm serious!), maybe she'll do an exorcism on your fleas.

Bridgette: your a doll! Your posts always make me chuckle. You know isn't it sad that so many of us are brought up with so much confusion that we have to feel like we're just not worthy. I'm glad your out of that(from the sounds of it). I know nothing about the goddess stuff you've spoke of in other posts but I know theres a different me hidden under all this baggage I carry and I hope I can find her someday and be ok with just being me. Keep in touch.

Heathen: thanks for your thoughts. I to feel like those damn fish.

GentlyFarel & Nathan: Your 100% right. The fact of the matter is I started doubting God a long time ago and when the JW's came knocking I would say I was an agnostic. I thought maybe they 'd change my mind. I also just needed to believe something good as my bestest friend in the world from before I even started kindergarden died suddenly & I have so much to tell her and I can't. If I could just give it up already I would probably be better off. My husband's favorite line is "I want us all to be together in Heaven when we die". It's just hard sometimes. I have one good friend who is a professed atheist (raised catholic) since about age 10 and oh could I tell you funny stories about her and church. But you know, she is the most happily married, sure of herself and her family and her place in the world than anyone I know personally.

    SaintSatan: good advice- thanks.
