Got this from a french government website for countering cults.

Do any of you think this sounds familiar? Lurkers - dare you read this???

"Techniques to contain "the Menace" ... are now increasingly gaining ground among cults. The most recent involves making it difficult to publish documents drawn up within the cult that could be considered as a threat to the cult.

This technique is characterized by the virtually indefinite extension of copy right. Consequently, words, expressions and entire texts are protected by a legal provision initially intended for the economic and COMMERCIAL field. These may not be reproduced without permission of the cult.

How is it possible to express the reality of a type of behavior if observers must onit from their analysis the key factors of teachings that have LEAD TO CRIMINAL ACTS?

The question of copyright has been brought up in several countries... the US Administration stated that it would be prepared to "remove the contradiction" between making documents available and protecting copyright.

In other words, the WT tactics on Quotes is now recognized as a cult tactic.

    What do you think?

I'm of the opinion that any material produced by a tax-exempt charitable or religious organization should be considered to be in the public domain. Simply put: No copyright for any of their material. The reason for this is because, as the charitable and religious organizations insist, they are not out to make a profit, therefor it is logically impossible to cause monetary harm by freely reproducing their material.

Not only should it be "public domain" material, it should be REQUIRED of any group that wishes to obtain and maintain a tax exempt status to be completely and utterly transparent.

This is not going to be a problem for legitimate groups, but it has the potential to really mess up groups that are deceptive in their recruitment techniques and that employ mind control and manipulation to recruit and retain membership.

It seems US law is designed to protect the cults, until they go so far as to collect weapons and threaten the population with violence in some way.

European countries are probably more willing to make these reasonable laws to fight against cults. Maybe that's because they can easily see how much power cults have over people, and it's a very fine line between something like JWs and militant Muslim groups? I guess maybe we'll have to wait for more problems with these types of groups in the US before anything will change. The protection of religion is the one thing I hate most about living in the US.
