Fundamentalist mindsets.....

    The longer I am away from the borg, the more all the fundys look alike to me.

    Today as I sipped my coffee, the owner of the coffee shop [a nice fellow] spoke to me as he often does. The topic turned quickly to religion, as he often tries to 'witness' to me. As I heard him speak, the same basic witness message came through loud and clear.

    He said;

    "Those that attend church every sunday can still be destined for hell if they are not born again and saved by the Lord, just like all the others out there that refuse to listen to Him."

    I could hear the witness version playing in the background, slightly altered words, but same message;

    "Those that go to the hall every sunday can still be destined to die at Armageddon if they are not actively serving Jehovah, just like all the others out there that refuse to listen to our message."

    The more my mind clears, the more similarities I see in all the fundy groups. When I first left, I loved to speak with this guy since I saw his Christianity as a completely different animal to the witness religion I had just left. Now I can see little difference when I listen carefully. Fear, guilt, are still the motivation to get with the program.

    Thinking that you have a special "in" with god or some "extra special" information that nobody else has is a breeding ground for fundies. Sometimes we just need to sit back and admit we don't know as much as we think we do. The human condition is one of ignorance and arrogance.

    Yep - the older I get, and especially the longer I am out of the witness club, the more I see that I don't know anything at all in the spectrum of the universe. I think the world would be a far better place if we all saw that.

    BTW, drew, I saw your posts last week. How are things going with your most recent travails?

    Things are actually going pretty good Jeff. I know that it's not going to be easy with the Elder situation, but the relationship between me and my wife is pretty strong. It's amazing that she has actually been doubting for quite some time now. Mainly because there is no love in the congregation. I even was talking to her yesterday about 'Crisis of Conscience' and even got to read the preface to her. She said some day she's going to read it, but that she's not ready yet. All in due time. Anyway, things are on the up and up. It's all part of the human expierance. Sure it's sad but there's so much more to live for. Got to keep moving ahead.
