Remember the first school year your parents passed the torch on to you and YOU had to talk to your teachers about opening exercises and holidays and such? What did you say? Did you just give them the school brochure? Did you have a speech prepared? What grade were you in?

On my first day of school my mother and my aunt took my cousin and I to the principles office and explained all the flag and holiday stuff to him. This was only a few years after the end of WWII and it was not a popular position to be in. Our teacher misunderstood and would send us to the office every morning until the flag salute was done. A really screwed up way for two little boys to begin their education.

When the torch was passed to me, I said nothing. I stood for the flag salute & told my mother I didn't. I didn't mention pep rallies etc. & just attended them. I believed at the time they were conscience matters & didn't agree with my mother's hard ass stance. I think I was in high school when I was allowed to handle it on my own. I hated the school brochure & don't remember ever giving it to a teacher.
Before that, it was hell. I was excluded from tons of stuff. We were required to act out a play in music class & my mother wouldn't let me because one of my lines referred to being flat-chested, and what kind of "witness" would that be? I had to sit out the required labs in science class because they supposedly taught evolution. etc., etc.
