Venting about the World Cup 2006

Is anyone else as fed up with all the hype as I am? I know dedpoet isn't - he can't wait for it to start, and if he could have got tickets, he would be flying out to Germany to watch it. Instead of that, he is planning to watch every England match in his local pub. Admittedly, he has invited me along, but I am not interested in football at all, so I'll most likely decline the invitation, which means that I'm going to be spending a few nights alone soon.

Apart from that, he has spent most of the afternoon "decorating" the flat with England flags, banners, stickers and even an air freshener, so there is no escape from it. His car is covered in red and white stickers, flags and he even has a red and white football on the end of his aerial. He has 3 or 4 shirts to wear to the games, as well as a hat. He seems more fanatical about this than he ever was about being a jw, so thank goodness it only lasts about a month! We haven't rowed about it, and I doubt we will, but it seems I am about to become a temporary "football widow", and I don't like it. At the moment, he is outside hanging yet another flag up, so I think our neighbours will be well aware that an England fan lives here! If they came inside, they'd be even more aware of it, with all the banners, stickers in every window, etc. I hope for his sake, after all the trouble and expense, that England do well, but I will be pleased to see it end so that I can take all the "decorations" down - he didn't put this many up at Christmas.

Anyone else know anyone this fanatical?

Um yes. Pretty much EVERYONE at work. Urgh count me out. The REAL World Cup is next year.... The RUGBY WORLD CUP. Now we're talking! That is when I get my England flags out and take time off work to go watch the matches live! And I don't fear for my life as I have done at footie matches!

It's generating far more interest here in the US than any previous cup. Even though our pro league (MLS) continues to struggle to make money and attract fans, the popularity of international soccer is growing exponentially here. I think it's pretty cool :)

The problem (and blessing) of living far away on the left coast of these United States is that there's nothing much being said about the World Cup at all. Even though soccer/football has caught on in schools and the country does field a great womens team, and a fair mens team, the average Oregonian doesn't really give a shit about it. As an ex-pat Brit (and former West Ham supporter) I am inclined to think about it periodically, but the only reason that the subject will ever come up is that my business partner (an ex-pat Aston Villa supporter) will watch every game he can. So that's when I will know it's on.

I'm afraid all the hype for this World Cup is misplaced. I expect another Brazil - Germany final with Brazil taking home to Cup for the 6th time.

    England - Customary QF exit.

USA - Won't qualify from the group.

I wonder how the world will react should the U.S. make a run?

The World Cup has popularity in the U.S. for one reason: Americans want to see the best. THis is the main reason why the MLS is iffy in the minds of most Americans. The MLS is doing what it's was designed for. A league to nurture talent for the World Cup.

The world cup is great for people who have nothing of import taking place in their lives. It gives them a break from playing Spider Solitaire.
