America - The Good Neighbor

I may get some flack for posting this, but I read it and was moved to tears. They are not my words - it was written by Toronto, Canada's TV journalist/commentator Gordon Sinclair. These words are the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

    Tribute to America

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon-not once, but several times-and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

    Stand proud, America!

After seeing the Palestians cheering on the West Bank yesterday my stomach dropped. I was physically sick. I certainly hope that we Americans have the decorum to NOT thumb our noses at the other countries. But after seeing the long, long lines of people at Carter Blood Clinic's Blood Drive (here in Dallas, TX) I cannot tell you of another time that I am MORE PROUD TO BE AMERICAN! With our differences and quarrels, we have the ability to pull together in a time of crisis. THAT makes me proud!

This is beautiful and true. Oh so true. To me we Americans are like a great big ol family. A lot of the time we can't get along for shit, but when someone messes with us we come together and show that our hearts are in the right place.

This country does do a great deal to help other countries in their time of need. I think this is because just about every American has some sort of tie to a foreign country. Especially those in Europe. I also have to say we do so because we all know deep down that this coubtry is something special. We realize that we have it good here and our human spirit wants us to share that goodness with the world. Yeah, there may be some hard science behind our altruism. However, I'll say that alot of other societies have existed and have not matched the generousity of the U.S.

Great Thread! I was watching the news this evening and it showed people in New York holding candlelight vigils outside the hospital in Manhattan. Also vigil service in DC where the Star Spangled Banner was being sung. All over people are coming together to support one another and pray for peace. There are more volunteers than are even needed right now. NY stopped the blood coming in because so much poured in they had to say they had enough right now. Americans are NOT evil. The stories that are coming out about the people who called their families on their cell phones from the doomed planes and others who lost their lives are heartbreaking. All those people are heroic. Yes, there are those that are of questionable morals amongst us but I think the majority of people are good and though differences may arise we are free to say what we want as citizens in our quest for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Our country has such an amazing history and the melting pot of people that make this country come together in times like these to show support for their fellow citizens. It's sad it has to take bad times to remember the good in us all.
I am also troubled recently that any group of people can denounce what we stand for: our patriotism, our country, our flag. I feel part of something great when I see and hear stories of US citizens. And in times like these our flag and our songs symbolize that. I am for world peace and unity. I am against all killing. But I live in America. It would be hard to take a neutral stance as part of a religious dogma when our country was built on a belief in God. And I could not turn my back in times like this because "I am no part of this world". Quite frankly I am.

Thanks for posting this, Andi. The USA has shown great generosity and compassion in the past, even to its enemies. Especially was this true in Japan after World War II. We helped them rebuild their country and economy, and that was despite what happened at Pearl Harbor and the terrible battles in the Pacific. It will be interesting to see what nations of the world will stand with America when it comes time to respond against the perpetrators of this terrorist attack.

I heard this on the radio this morning and it gave me goosebumps. I am not easily moved by sentiment, but I was proud to be an American when I heard this. I don't really follow political news, so some of this was news to me and all I can say is I hope a lesson is learned. Not by the terrorists, they will get their lesson soon enough, but by the nations of the world who take our support gladly and then turn their backs when it's time to reciprocate.

Where would they be without our great nation? Who would they look to in their hour of need? I'm sure our government is watching to see how we are treated in this disaster - don't think there won't be repercussions later resulting from lack of support now.

Right now our interrests lie at home to pick up the pieces, but we will prevail. And when this is all taken care of there will be other, less dire situations to attend to throughout the world - and we will know where our friendships lie.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

    Peace
