I watched "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and was quite surprized. I had expected to see a mindless comedy - but instead found a sort

of "Capra-esque" gem about forgiveness. The movie's message is presented with skill and good humor. I read that Tyler Perry's work is

widely appreciated, crossing over into white audiences.

It made me think of what the Watchtower could have been - creative, conscience driven and good. It made me think about the evil

spirited old men who stopped the organization from making real spiritual progress ( which you can read about in Crisis of Conscience).

Instead, we have stillted, propagandistic dramas written by hacks - whose only goal is abject obedience to whatever the old men

    of Brooklyn want.

I witness the road not taken.

Thanks for the info Met, I haven't seen this film, but it sounds like something I would enjoy

Perhaps someone should take the governing body to see it, and make them watch it 20 or 30 times. They might learn something, though I doubt it

The WT Society loosened the reins on their rank-and-file for a little while in the 1970's. As you point out, Raymond Franz chronicles the dramatic increase in authoritarianism in his books.

Leaders who trust that their followers have a good motive will give them a direction to go, and the freedom to accomplish the task in the best way they know how. In the case of Christianity, the membership is supposed to moved by love and faith.

The WT leadership, fearing it was losing its grip, tightened the reins a la King Solomon, and many responded by leaving then (or later after they realized what was happening). Using fear tactics, and threatening people with excommunication/disfellowshipping now and death at Armageddon later, the Society has shown they clearly do not trust their members to behave well unless they are scared into doing so.
