I thought I read somewhere on JWD that the Society ended up rejoining the UN as an NGO. Is that correct? Does anyone know? I hope I am not going crazy.

    Thanks, Jim Whitney

I don't have the link but I believe the issue was that while one branch of the WTS resigned their membership after being exposed there are still one or two European branches that have retained their membership

    Jim,

I'm pretty sure what you are looking for is on Randys site {freeminds.org. [ for the lurkers ]}. Click on the U.N. page he has on the main page.

The problem is some have a hard time comprehending what an NGO is, and what the original scandal was all about.

The WT Society is by definition, a Non-Governmental Organization, an NGO. They are an organization, and they are not part of a government. NGO. They have been an NGO, therefore, ever since they were incorporated, and they remain an NGO today.

The issue back in 2001/2 was when it was discovered that the WT had registered with the UN Department of Public Information as an NGO in 1991 and had maintained this relationship for 10 years. This registration required the Watchtower to support and adhere to the goals of the UN. This, of course, was completely hypocritical for them to do.

Now, they are no longer registered with the UN DPI as an NGO, but they still are an NGO, and apparently they still register and show up at various conferences and forums. Quite shocking, I would think, to the average r&f JW, but not the same as being a registered member of the UN DPI.

    Hope this helps.
