Hubby & were trying to do a classic fade and have not been to a meeting for a few months. Needless to say, it didn't work and the elders came a callin'. We have avoided talking with anyone by not answering the phone and turning off the answering machine (which I HATE). But the PO was wise to us and called from a number that I didn't regognize and I answered. I gave him the old "we've been so busy!" and he told me not to forsake the meetings blah blah blah.

Then the daughter and I were at Wal Mart and saw some sisters at the check-out stand down from us. They were older so I told my daughter not to turn around and walk really fast to the car. She got totally freaked and asked me if we stole something!!! LOL!!! I told her I was just not up for the confrontation and "we've been missing you's" .

We have to do something different because it pisses me off that I'm a grown-up and I have to hide and skulk around! YUCK!!!!

wouldn't it have been funny if your bags set off the detector alarm on your way out.......well maybe not, since you were in a hurry.

The sales clerk didn't do what ever she was supposed to do the other day and the CD I just bought set off the alarm.

    It's embarrassing.

I am shocked we didn't because I am ALWAYS that guy!. But then it would have been funny when the elderly sister caught up...I could have told her I'd love to talk but I want to make sure the greeter doesn't find my goods!!!

Pretty soon you'll be an old pro at doing "the fade" (not to be confused with "the wave"). When we first left, I constantly thought that BIG BROTHER was looking over my shoulder at everything I did. I skulked around the greeting card aisle when I needed a birthday card like any moment someone from the KH would "catch" me in The Act of Buying Pagan Cards. I was afraid to buy x-mas cards at the store so I ordered them on-line. I felt like such a coward.

But as time goes on...you'll get much better at not putting a guilt trip on yourself because you choose to leave a false religion. Just yesterday I was buying a few items at our local Kohl's store...and the check-out was being manned/womaned by a person from our old congregation. I had on a short-sleeve shirt and my tattoo on my right arm was perfectly visible (and quite lovely I might add). It didn't even cross my mind to avoid the check-out. I trooped through there and kept my arm in full view. She treated me quite nicely...just like any customer. So I give her kudo's for that. But then again...that is her job. SHE didn't have a choice. Treat a customer badly and you might get the axe. I mention this because a few years ago I may have waited for another check-out to open or even left the store without my purchases.

Just keep your head up. We've got nothing to be ashamed of. They do. It takes time though my dear...it takes time.

    cathy l.
