I haven't flown anywhere in quite some time. My family and I are going to a wedding on the opposite side of the country. Would love to call it a vacation, but "in-laws" are involved, so..... you know how that can go sometimes!

(I have a very perverted brother-in-law that cannot keep his hands to himself. I'll be trying to dodge him a third of the time.)

I've been told NOT to take carry on luggage, and the bare-minimum in my purse. No cell phone, no liquids. I've even heard NO reading materials!

I live in the USA, by the way. I am assuming that I can take liquids in my luggage? Such as make up? If this is not true, please inform me! I really don't want to get to the airport and have to throw my whole bottled up face in the trash. (If I don't take the make up, this could be a very handy deterrant for the pervert brother-in-law. NAW! He would still be a perv. Scratch that thought.)

Since there will be many photos taken, and I am not very photo-genic as it is, I would really like to look my best. Vanity is a terrible thing. But there are enough unflattering photos of me floating around out there. I would really rather minimize the damage.

Any tips on how to pack, what to take, what not to take.....???? (I'm leaving the day after tomorrow.)

The saddest thing of all is that I won't be able to plug in to JWD again until Aug.22! I'll miss you guys! I have a little apprehensiveness creeping up on me, because of the terrorist threats, etc..., so if you could pray for me to have peace, I would appreciate it.

God bless and keep all of you! I have been blessed beyond measure by the wit and wisdom that the posters on this site have brought into my life. You are so courageous and inspiring. Take care!

Because of the current situation in the UK, don't bring any liquids with you in a carry-on bag. You can bring all the liquids you want as long as they are in the baggage you check at the ticket counter. You can bring your purse as a carry-on, just forget your nail clippers and anything sharp. Books and magazines are fine to bring with you.

Remember that the xray machine for checked baggage will ruin camera film, so don't put that in your checked baggage.

I should check out the website for your airline and they will tell you the exact rules for domestic flights in the US as they stand. Things are pretty much back to normal heer in the UK - only they are asking each person to take one rucksack sized item of hnadluggage now - but then that was always the case. And we can take electrical items in hand luggage now.

It sounds like your brother in law is a right pain! I'd slip teh photographer a tenner and ask him to get on film any instances of BIL behaving inappropriately and to give them to you. Then you can use them how you choose!

We just flew back from Florida the day before all the UK threats . Your make up is fine just put it in your checked baggage. Advice seal your shampoo / hair spray ect. in extra large ziplock baggies in case pressure makes them leak . They advise to keep any presciption meds in your purse just in case luggage gets delayed to destination. Film is suppose to be okay x-rayed as long as it is under 800 speed. Less carry on gets you through check lines faster . You may have to take your shoes off at check lines so wear something easy to slip on and off .

Is he like Uncle Jeffrey in Bridget Jones? In that case don't dress like a tart! :)
As far as I have heard, you can pack liquids in your CHECKED baggage, if they won't let you take it on your carry-on...yes, foundation is truly truly important I must concur.
Try to plan your outfits, and DON'T pack an entire suitcase of shoes (i have made this tragic mistake).
I would also recommend not using the blankets that are provided by the airlines. They are not the cleanest, in fact one we got had barf all over it. Not what you would call cozy.
don't worry, you have a greater chance of dying being electrocuted by your toaster. So if you can make it through breakfast toast today you'll be fine.
hope you have a good time

Hubby and I just returned from a trip to the States yesterday. We spent many hours in airplanes and airports. Everything went smoothly. We left extra early for the security checks, which helped a lot. Arrive up to two hours before your flight is booked to leave. My big surprise was that they are x-raying your SHOES as well. Wear slip-on sandals. Next time I'd buy myself a neck pillow at Wal-Mart and bring that. I noticed veteran travellers walked around with the thing perched on their shoulder. Not very pretty, but helpful! YOU WILL be spending a lot of time in lines and waiting areas, so reading helps a lot. And SUDOKU, apparently.

I've been told NOT to take carry on luggage, and the bare-minimum in my purse. No cell phone, no liquids. I've even heard NO reading materials!

Reading materials are fine. Cell phone is fine, keep it turned off. Security may ask to examine it. We also took on carry-on luggage, just made sure there were no liquids in there.

I live in the USA, by the way. I am assuming that I can take liquids in my luggage? Such as make up?

    Yes.

Don't forget underwear and your toothbrush. Everything else is optional. There are laundromats where you are going. Take under a week's worth of clothes. YOU DON'T want to be lugging a half-dozen loaded suitcases around in the airport. You DON'T want an overloaded suitcase exploding in the middle of the concourse Non-wrinkle fabrics are good. Try ROLLING your dress instead of FOLDING it. Fewer wrinkles. Will you be swimming? Take a suit. Put all your liquids in a large ziploc bag, so if they do leak, they don't get all over your clothes.

As for the fear of flying, I can't help you with that. I find it thrilling, and a major turn-on. Just ask my husband.

Great advice about the creepy brother-in-law, Crumpet!

The rest of the advice is terrific too. It puts me more at ease to know what to expect. I guess I need to make sure we don't have holey socks! :)

Don't forget to bring some cash to buy some junk food on board or in the airport since most airlines don't feed you anymore. Check the airline you are flying with as some don't take cash and only cards and the other way around.

Don't worry about terror threats. There are literally millions of people flying above us as we type and thousands of flights a day. The chances of your flight being a target is very slim. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the view.

We flew on Saturday and will again this weekend. You are fine taking a carry on as long as it has no liquid, gels- even lip gloss, hair spray, shampoos or anything else. You can take your medications, books anything else you want. We did check our luggage instead of carrying it just so it speeds up the line.

I am assuming that I can take liquids in my luggage?

If properly checked and if you follow all of the FAA regulations correctly, you can carry firearms and ammunition in your check baggage.
