My Girlfriend was wondering why Jesus didn't assume power after he was raised back to heaven, and witnesses say it was 1914 that he came to power.

Because it has not happened yet.

Now the Jw response, Jesus takes his stand in Heaven while the earthly kings rage war against him Psalms ch 2. Notice the kings of the earth after Jesus is king take their stand against him. Thus proving the earthly kins still are holding power over the earth.

Depends upon spin. A number of passages have Jesus given all authority before his death and after his death. There were very different views among NT writers what the kingdom was.

The idea that Jesus is awaiting being given power until a certain date is unscriptural. I believe Jesus always had all the power. Everything is subjected under him since the time of his arrival until now. That is why John the baptist said "the kingdom of heaven has drawn near". The JWs say it is because Jesus was the representative of that kingdom. He is not the "representative" but the King. The kingdom is all about Jesus.

What power did he not have prior to his death? He had the power to cure, heal the sick, forgive sins, raise the dead, calm the waves of the sea, invite others to be co heirs with him in the kingdom, read peoples thoughts, and much more.

But like Pete says there are different views on the subject. Some take a few scriptures to say Jesus had power over all only AFTER his resurrection and some take scripture to show he always had power and authority over all. I tend to believe he always did. I think you have to look at all the scriptures before making up your mind. Here are some:

    1 Peter 3:22 - Says about Jesus:

who has gone into heaven and is at God's righthand?with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him

But, These verses show Jesus had power and authority over all prior to his resurrection.

    Matthew 28:18
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me

    John 17:2
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him

    Luke 4:36
All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!"

    Hope this helps, Lilly

I would like to say also that the different view are because of misunderstanding scripture. There is no contradiction. If in Matthew it says Jesus had already been given authority over all. Then When Peter stated that Jesus went into heaven with authority over all - he was not saying NOW that he went to heaven he was given authority over all but merely asserting the fact that even though he is now going to heaven, he still retains the power he has over all. Hope this makes sense, Lilly

Yeah, the reason my Girlfriend was asking about that is because she is Catholic, and well Jesus is God. Which haha would make sence, considering after Jesus (God) came down and lived a few years in the real world and went back to heaven He sure seemed to mellow out about EVERYTHING.

    LOL.

Perchance the difference between book-learning and practical experience?
