    Driver blames no goats

    When Canadian police pulled over a speeding Swiss driver, the driver claimed he was taking advantage of the ability to drive fast without hitting a goat.

    The driver was driving at 40 miles over the speed limit in eastern Ontario.

    "A motorist from Switzerland, used to driving around hills and mountains, takes advantage of the ability to go faster without risking hitting a goat," read the traffic officer's notes of the incident. Police fined him £170.

    Very original, it's almost a pity he didn't get away with it

    That was my thought Mary, but he didn't get away with it. I doubt I'd get away with it in the UK either.

    I think he said that on the heat of the moment just to excuse himself. Otherwise the excuse sounds really stupid and it wouldn't get him off the hook.


    If I remember well in the USA and Canada they have some low speed limits even on the highways, something like 50 MPH. For a European doing 90 MPH on a highway (France, Italy, Germany) is almost within the legal limit, those roads are made for speed.

    The driver was not going 40 miles over the limit, but 40 Kilometers over, which is about 22 mph over. In Canada, the maximum speed limit is 100 Kph, or very slightly over 62 mph in the USA. When visiting Canada, I try to keep up with the flow of traffic on the major freeways, which tend to stay around 120 Kph (about 75 mph) ... but, if you see a cop, slow down to about 110 Kph, and they will leave you alone.
