A Walk Down Memory Lane

I had a couple of tires installed on my car today and while I was waiting I walked down the old main street of Leaksville, the name of the city before it was changed to Eden.

I had a lot of old memories come back in my mind from my childhood. There is only one store that was there when I was a kid. I remembered doing street work and the very spot where I stood and talked to a girl I liked who came by with her mother who was a friend of my aunt. I must have been about 15 or so and wanted to date this worldly girl. It was OK with my parents back then in the early 50s.

I walked by the old spot where the old Colonial Theater used to be, This is where my dad worked when he was alive and where we saw all those old movies. I remembered the stores that were there during World War2.

There is a web site you can see pictures of the old town. Google Leaksville NC and you can see many old pictures of my town.

Where you see the tree on the right is a big beautiful home half way down main street.

That's very cool, Ken. I should go look up my hometown and see if any of it looks the same. lol

I went back to my home town after over 20 years, and went to see the various places where I remembered epic "witlessing" disputes and saw the Kindumb Hall. ( I can't call it a "Hell" as usual, as at the end of the 60s they were so different)

I recalled the faces and ways of talking of the lovely old ones who had the bible student sweetness and kindness. All dead now, their dreams and hopes dust forever.

As I walked away, I took one last look, and started to cry. Now I know why Scarlett O'Hara says "Don't look back. Never look back. It tugs at your heart until you can't bear it."

So many gone. So many lost. So many happy times that can never come back.

That looks like a place you could write a book about. Lots of memories.

Hey Ken, that looks like Mayberry RFD. Very cool memory lane. It seems the older I get the more time I spend reminiscing and the more meaningful the memories and family are.

I would love to have that "coupe" in the picture.

(Anyone as old as we are, would know what a "coupe" is). No, don't tell the "younguns"!!!

Oh well...okay....It's the 1937(?) car at the left, that has a hump on the top, and (maybe) a rumble seat in the back. It's like a 4 passenger car, instead of 5. viz: you feel "couped up" in it, especially in the back seat. That's where the word "coupe" comes from, I imagine.

    I love your post.

editted to add: I almost bought myy cousins' coupe many years ago. I fell in love with it, the first time I saw it. He didn't want to sell it at the time. :(
