Is it possible?

My mother died from something that almost killed me. Now, I keep wondering if she prayed to God to take her instead. I had a surgery for a goiter that was giving me swallowing and breathing problems. After the surgery, I developed a large hematoma under the incision, which was compressing my trachea. When the doctor got there, he had to rip out the stitches at bedside. My husband said that blood spattered everywhere. The doctor took me, bed, and all directly to surgery. During that time, he managed to intubate my lung causing the other lung to collapse. I had a tension pneumothorax. I was going down the tubes, fast. The doctor called in a pulmonologist, who told them that the endo tube was in too far. . .anyway. . . I ended up on a ventilator for a couple of days. My mother came to see me and other family members.

A little later, I found out that both my vocal cords were paralyzed in a closed position; so I had to have a tracheostomy for awhile. My mother hated seeing me with that trach. One vocal cord recovered, so I was able to have the tracheostomy removed. If it had not of healed (or whatever), I would of had the trach for life.

This year, my mother suffered a severe tracheal obstruction; she is found to have a substernal goiter (IT GREW BACK!!!). It caused her to have anoxic brain injury, which eventually led to her death.

I just find the whole thing SO strange. I know it's not probable; but I will always wonder.

I am sorry for the loss of your mom. While she no doubt prayed for your recovery, I don't think God makes those kind of deals. If he DID though, your mom must have loved you so much-that you even consider that she would pray in that way tells me a lot of how you were sure of her deep love for you. That you lost her is sad, but that you had such a mom is a blessing.

Keep an eye on that goiter issue-for your kids and yourself. That is pretty scary!

Wow, MsM! I had a dear friend in 1983 get a hematoma after thyroidectomy and crashed. I'm not familiar with risk factors for thyroid problems, but is it inherited? Environmental contaminants (Like the Chernobyl disaster fallout)? Just wondered if there is some was to protect/prevent/screen you other family...

NSRN, I think it is inherited. My mother had a goiter before. The doctor did a subtotal thyroidectomy on her about 16 years ago. We didn't think that the piece of thyroid tissue that he had left would grow into another goiter. I have another sister who had a subtotal thyroidectomy too. Yes, I agree, my other brothers and sisters should be checked.

JWdaughter, I will be calling my sisters and brothers to make sure that they check out their thyroids. I'm going to talk to my endocrinologists about my children, and see what she suggests.

That's a pretty callous god to be praying to. The concept that god needed to take anyone at all is pretty week, and having to placate him with taking someone else isn't loving in the slightest, especially since Jesus supposedly already paid of the sins of both.

Sounds more like a co-incidence (and possibly a genetic predisposition to the condition) and 'unforseen circumstance'.

    Mrs. McD,

I read your story and cried. I have had several patients that didn't make it thru what you discribed. I'm so thankful you did!! PLEASE make sure your family is tested!! Be VERY proactive!!!

One of my patients did pray for god to take her. It was so sad!!

    I love you!! (((((Mrs. Mcd)))))

Yep, it does sound like the God in the bible. I just know that mom didn't want to die before her children. Of course, you are right.

I was praying that he pull me through. I could tell something was going on; even though, I was under. When I awoke on the vent, I wrote to the nurses to keep me KNOCKED OUT. Being on a vent ain't no fun!

I guess time heals all wounds.

    Love you back! CrazyblondDeb (((Hugs)))
