    Is "TACKING" for True Christians?

    The Watchtower, May 15, 1976, Page 298:

It is a serious matter to represent God and Christ in one way, then find that our understanding of the major teachings and fundamental doctrines of the Scriptures was in error, and then after that, to go back to the very doctrines that, by years of study, we had thoroughly determined to be in error. Christians cannot be vacillating—‘wishy-washy’—about such fundamental teachings. What confidence can one put in the sincerity or judgment of such persons?

    The Watchtower, December 1, 1981, Pages 26-31:

Light from God’s Word has flashed forth, like the sunshine on “a morning without clouds” to illuminate ever more clearly the pathway that Jehovah’s servants must tread.—2 Sam. 23:3, 4.

2 However, it may have seemed to some as though that path has not always gone straight forward. At times explanations given by Jehovah’s visible organization have shown adjustments, seemingly to previous points of view. But this has not actually been the case. This might be compared to what is known in navigational circles as “tacking.” By maneuvering the sails the sailors can cause a ship to go from right to left, back and forth, but all the time making progress toward their destination in spite of contrary winds. And that goal in view for Jehovah’s servants is the “new heavens and a new earth” of God’s promise.—2 Pet. 3:13.

[...] Jehovah God has also provided his visible organization, his “faithful and discreet slave,” made up of spirit-anointed ones, to help Christians in all nations to understand and apply properly the Bible in their lives. Unless we are in touch with this channel of communication that God is using, we will not progress along the road to life, no matter how much Bible reading we do.—Compare Acts 8:30-40.

[...] True, since the light shines forth progressively, and because there have been mistakes due to human imperfection and weakness, these Christians have had, on occasion, to reevaluate viewpoints and teachings. But has this not resulted in refinement, to their benefit?

[...] Such adjustments might be said to follow a principle that has been said to govern the progress of scientific truth. In brief, it works something like this: A t first there is a proposition made that is subject to argumentation. It holds out great possibilities for enlightenment or practical application. But then in time it is seen to have certain flaws or weaknesses. So the tendency is to go to a proposition at the opposite extreme. Later it is found that that position does not represent the whole truth either, and so there is a combining of the valid points in both positions. Time and again this principle has applied in the way Proverbs 4:18 has been fulfilled. This has been termed the thesis (proposition), antithesis (opposing proposition) and synthesis (a combining of the two).

[...] Of course, such development of understanding, involving “tacking” as it were, has often served as a test of loyalty for those associated with the “faithful and discreet slave.” However, progress is being made continually toward fuller appreciation of the “good news” and all that it means. It has been the experience of those who stay close to God’s organization that questions and things hard to understand are always cleared up with the passing of time. And as the light shines forth ever more clearly, how heartwarming and satisfying the way proves to be! It is as Peter expressed it when some of the disciples stumbled over Jesus’ teaching: “Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life.” (John 6:68) The Lord Jesus Christ still has those “sayings,” and he is dispensing them through the one “faithful and discreet slave” organization that he today uses on earth. It is like the “good tree” that Jesus described as bringing forth “fine fruit.” (Matt. 7:17) Apart from this, the only choice is association with Satan’s political “wild beast” and “Babylon the Great,” the world empire of false religion. (Rev. 13:1; 17:5) No dedicated Christian would want to return to that!—2 Pet. 2:22; John 14:6.

[...] If at times there is a measure of adjustment, invariably an improved position results. The refinement has not been in vain. With Christ now reigning, the enlightenment enjoyed by Jehovah’s people “is as the light of morning, when the sun shines forth.” (2 Sam. 23:3, 4; Matt. 25:31) Favored indeed are all those who serve loyally with the “faithful and discreet slave” organization, Jehovah’s visible agent of communication! Theirs is the wise choice, for their pathway leads on to the precious goal of everlasting life in the new order that Jehovah is creating.—Isa. 65:17, 18; 66:22.

    Ephesians 4:14 (NCV):

Then we will no longer be babies. We will not be tossed about like a ship that the waves carry one way and then another. We will not be influenced by every new teaching we hear from people who are trying to fool us. They make plans and try any kind of trick to fool people into following the wrong path._______________________________________________________________

    Galatians 1:6-9 (NCV):

... I am amazed that you are turning away so quickly and believing something different than the Good News. Really, there is no other Good News. But some people are confusing you; they want to change the Good News of Christ. We preached to you the Good News. So if we ourselves, or even an angel from heaven, should preach to you something different, we should be judged guilty! I said this before, and now I say it again: You have already accepted the Good News. If anyone is preaching something different to you, let that person be judged guilty!

    Acts 17:11-12 (NCV):

These people were more willing to listen than the people in Thessalonica. The Bereans were eager to hear what Paul and Silas said and studied the Scriptures every day to find out if these things were true. So, many of them believed, as well as many important Greek women and men.

    1 John 4:1 (NCV):

My dear friends, many false prophets have gone out into the world. So do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God.

It took all of 5 minutes for the Watchtower worshippers to scurry down their rabbit holes never to be heard or seen again.

The WTS' definition and use of the word "tacking" bothers me. I used to own a sailboat so know exactly what tacking is all about.

If you want to go from point 'A' to point 'B' but the wind is not blowing from A to B, you have to tack the boat. So far, they are correct. Tacking allows you to move the boat forward toward your destination using a zig-zag route. BUT YOU NEVER CHANGE YOUR INITIAL DESTINATION.

    'A'

    a

    wind direction -------------> b

    a

    b

    'B'

The wind direction precludes sailing directly from A to B. So you have to sail obliquely to the wind. (That's what the keel or centerboard is for but that's a different lesson... ) You, for example, sail towards 'a' and then to 'b' then back to the next 'a' then towards the next 'b' and so forth until you come upon 'B' which was your initial destination.

Yes, it takes a lot more time due to the increase of distances you need to travel zig-zagging your way toward point 'B' but it's the only way to do it. Tacking can just be thought of as taking a winding path to reach your destination.

You don't lose sight of your initial goal and nothing changes except the time required to travel what would be the straight-line distance "tacking" the zig-zag course. So "tacking" just doesn't seem, to me, to be a great way to portray a big doctrinal flip-flop.

    Nice try but no cigar...
