Last Friday, my wife and I drove home from work, I write in the present tense from now on: I am just to let her off and drive on to arrange some things. The street where we live is a straight one, houses some 50 metres apart, there is a drive from the street to each house, and along our drive, which is some 25 metres long and leading to the garage, we have a hedge which starts some 5 metres from the street. Got the picture? Our daughter and her husband with their three kids live in the same town. They’ve got a white estate car.
My wife from time to time has premonitions, she feels things, hears that someone is coming five minutes before they actually come etc., and in her youth she a couple of times experienced some scary stuff. BUT, she does not think about it, she has the attitude that "it is there, but I do not want to speak or think about it, it is better to pretend it does not happen." I have only experienced one very strange sound "thing" in my life, but a few times I have heard people coming before they come, and half of these times I have been with my wife, half of them I have been alone.
OK, the background is set. I guess you know whereto this is leading. Now, as we drive towards our house, we are some 40 metres from the drive, and we see the rear half of a white estate car having entered our drive disappearing behind the hedge (rear half because the front of the car has already disappeared behind the hedge, got it?), and we clearly see the taillights brighten up because the driver is obviously putting on the brakes, is slowing down. The obvious thought is, that it is the car of our daughter, she has just turned off the street and entered our drive and is slowing down before parking. I turn to my wife and say, "Ah, it is Xxxx, did you know she was coming to see us now?", whereupon my wife replies, "No, I did not – I hope she and the kids will not stay TOO long, because I am somewhat tired and really wanted to lie down and have a nap." We come to our drive five seconds later – and there is no car in it, no white car has entered the drive. "Now THAT is strange", I say to my wife, "You saw it too, didn’t you?" "Yes", she says, "strange". I let her off, and I drive some distance further, too see if I/we had mixed up the drives – but no white car in the drives of our neighbours, either.
I drive off. Five minutes later, I get a call from my wife. You’ve already guessed it, "Now they came", she says.
As I said, I’ve heard such things a few times, my wife has too, more frequent. But I have never SEEN such a thing. And we were TWO to see it. And we DID see it. And there was NO mix-up, I checked the area around. It was strange, and I just had to tell.
