As Leolia points out, the Romans covertered earlier version into a vicious torture device. The T shape is essential if one is to have a "seat", the purpose of which is prolong the experience of pain. The mode of death in "crucifixtion" is asphyxiation. In order to get a breath, it is necessary to stand up on the nail pinning the feet. To speed up death, the Romans would break the legs of those being crucified, making it impossible to "stand up". The legs of those crucified with Jesus were broken to hasten death because the religious authorities didn't want to profane the rapidly approaching Sabbath and so appealed to the Roman authorities to "get it over with". Apparently Jesus was already dead when they got around to doing that.
