I was re-reading the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rightsfor another thread and came across this interesting tidbit:

    Article 26.

      (1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.

      (2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.

      (3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

If #2 is true, then ALL jw parents should be exercising their rights under #3 to home school their kids, right? Otherwise they are furthering the goals of the big bad beasty.

I hope no one from the BORG sees your post and gets some ideas! I was homeschooled because we moved around a-lot due to my dads job. Talk about a social freak...Homeschooled JW.....I wouldn't wish that on anyone! (though having to deal with pressures in school from being an outcast has got to be rough)

That's all we need are MORE homeschooled JW's.

    No further comments necessary.

I kinda like the idea of home schooling myself since going to a public school can be a huge hassle , I don't think it should be done unless the parents are qualified to teach tho. That was an interesting tid bit on the UN outlook of education . Education should be used in accord with peaceful intent . I don't think the public school system has that kind of control over the students , they can't stop racism or hate .By studying such things as slavery they may well accomplish the opposite .

I just have to put in a plug for non-JW homeschooling. We have h.s.ed for many years, and it has been a wonderful experience. However, unlike JWs we go out of the way to provide many opportunities for them with other kids out in the community (ie lessons and clubs, etc.) The one-on-one form of education (aka tutoring) provides an excellent education--2 kids of ours have gone on to grade 12 and college, both being at the top of their classes academically (because they learn how to study and also have a firm base under them) and also socially. The other two are still at home and we are enjoying going in-depth in areas of interest--it is one of the huge advantages. Give them a broad base of the important basics (i.e. the 3 rs and cultural literacy) then take extra time to investigate the areas that really excite them.

I do not know how this would be in a JW situation. I think they would isolate and also be wary of teaching too much "independent thinking". (BTW our kids are taught how to think and they have not left their faith, so what is the WT afraid of?)

There is lots and lots of support out there for homeschooling--materials and information on the how-tos, which makes it easy to learn along with the kids (things you may have missed or forgotten from your school years). I love to relearn things from an adult perspective--it makes so much more sense now, and we can tie it all together and see how subjects inter-relate, instead of the disconnectedness that occurs going from class to class with a different teacher in every subject.

If anyone is interested in more info just PM me. Hopefully my grammar and spelling is korrekt!

In my experience JW's use homeschooling to "protect" their children from the "world", Many of these parents have little education themselves and simply supply their children with textbooks and workbooks for them to teach themselves. They do nothing to further their children's skills or experiences (ex. trips to museums, library, etc.) They give no thought to rounding out the experience with regular exercise or sports. They give no thought to proper social skills. They aim is to grow another JW not to educate a child.

I didn't see any distinction in the UN statement between "education" and "home schooling". Both have the potential of positive or negative results. What is desired is educated masses that are tolerant of others, that's all! Read the part you didn't highlite!

With all the things the Jw's are wrong about, I have to wonder maybe the UN is a good thing.
