Yesterday, UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw flew to Iran. Although the visit had been arranged for sometime, the US are doubtless keen to mbe able to at least have some input into the talks even if they have to use Jack as a mouthpiece.

Lets now take a look at some of what the most famous Iranian of our times has had to say:

    Sayings of Ayatollah Khomeini:
A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However he should not penetrate, sodomising the child is OK. If the man penetrates and damages the child then he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl, however does not count as one of his four permanent wives. The man will not be eligible to marry the girls sister.
From Khomeini's book, "Tahrirolvasyleh", fourth volume, Darol Elm, Gom,
    Iran, 1990

It is better for a girl to marry in such a time when she would begin menstruation at her husband's house rather than her father's home. Any father marrying his daughter so young will have a permanent place in heaven.

From Khomeini's book, "Tahrirolvasyleh", fourth volume, Darol Elm, Gom,
    Iran, 1990

A man can have sex with animals such as sheep¹s, cows, camels and so on. However he should kill the animal after he has his orgasm. He should not sell the meat to the people in his own village, however selling the meat to the next door village should be fine.

From Khomeini's book, "Tahrirolvasyleh", fourth volume, Darol Elm, Gom,
    Iran, 1990

"If one commits the act of sodomy with a cow, a ewe, or a camel, their urine and their excrements become impure, and even their milk may no longer be consumed. The animal must then be killed and as quickly as possible and burned."

The little green book, Sayings of Ayatollah Khomeini, Political, Phylosophica, Social and Religious with a special introduction by Clive Irving, ISBN number 0-553-14032-9, page 47

So, what do you reckon? Are Muslim cultures now moving in a direction that we in the West can accept?

    Mmmm...

If we take that as representative of Muslims, we would have to take abortion clinic bombers as representative of Christians.

Islam, as Christianity, is a spectrum of beliefs.

An educated, liberal Muslim would be as revolted as you or I by that quote.

Look at religious distribution compared to development. Most Muslims live in the developing world. That means that many are uneducated. They believe all the shit their similarly ill-educated mullah tells them.

If we look at the socio-political development of some the countires, there are strong similarities with, say, England in the 12th-16th Century.

Was it Christianity that made England barbaric at that point? Nope.

Is it Islam that makes some Islamic countries barbaric? Nope.

Remember, Islam was the religon behind a huge growth in the knowledge of maths, astronomy, sciences, medicine, when Europe was in the Dark Ages.

It is the application of the religion that does the damage when grafted onto a tribal law system (such as Kohmeni did, such as the Taliban graft Islam onto their mysogynistic tribal law, such as right-wing tribalism grafted onto Christianity).

Of course, we could just make Muslim's out to be baby buggering bastards, but then hundreds of millions of people will die...

Keep on rocking in the free world...

Seems that a lot of these Fundamentalist Islamic leaders are moving in the direction of the South American guerilla leader who became President in Woody Allen's movie "Bananas" (early 1970s?). He said something like, "From now on the language of San Marcos will be Swedish." "All of you citizens are dirty! From now on everyone will change their underwear every day. And you will wear your underwear on the outside, so we can check."

Again the lesson is: Absolute power leads inevitably to absolute corruption and/or absolute stupidity.

We see this all the time in the Christian and Islamic religions. There must be something fundamental about the belief systems that tends to create extremism, since it's a lot less evident in the world's other great religions. Probably it's the notion that certain of their members can speak authoritatively for God.

Christians have their fundamentalists like JWs and some evangelicals. JWs have tried to regulate virtually every facet of behavior and belief. Many evangelicals do the same, although they tend not to punish members who don't go along -- they simply quit paying attention to them. The JW blood transfusion ban is a classic example. The common evangelical belief in young-earth creationism is another.

All of these things, from the crazy beliefs and practices of Christian Fundies, to the disgusting notions of Ayatollah Khomeini, should be published far and wide as examples of what runaway Fundamentalism tends to produce. Perhaps then, there will be a good chance of seeing John Lennon's vision of the future come to pass: "No religion".
