There's nothing new about it. When I was about 12 years old (36 years ago), and Catholic, I was given a copy of the New Testament. When I was reading Revelation I came across the passage about the number 666, and there was a footnote stating that some manuscripts rendered it as 616.
I don't have it any more, and don't recall what version of the NT it was. All of our Catholic stuff was destroyed when we joined the JWs.
