A teenager had his lower right leg bitten off by a Great White on the weekend in Esperance, Australia. He was rescued by two Kiwis who stopped the bleeding and got him to hospital.
On Monday night the TVNZ news said that Jehovahs Witnesses wanted the rights to his story!!! And we haven't heard anything since.
Now this sounds like rubbish, but there were 5 of us in the room talking and we all heard the same thing.
I've searched news agencies and nothing more has been said since the 3rd Dec. Can any of our Aussies report?
Cheers,
Pete.

Thanks Nelly, I've trawled through quite a bit of media, but I just found this from The Australian:
"Zak's mother Anne flew to Perth, but family spokesman Roger Gough said she would not comment while negotiations with the Seven Network were finalised.
"We felt the media would have a short-term interest in Zak, but Zak will have long-term needs so this is best for him," Mr Gough said."
So this might explain the blackout on info. Perhaps they are JW's and TVNZ got the wrong end of the stick. -

Boy who lost leg in shark bite refused transfusion 12th December 2006, 6:00 WST
The teenage surfer whose leg was bitten off by a shark near Esperance ordered rescuers not to allow him to be given the blood transfusions he urgently needed because he was a Jehovah’s Witness, it emerged last night.
Despite struggling to stay conscious from the pain and shock of the attack, Zac Golebiowski was adamant that he would not break his religious beliefs by accepting blood — a sin under the controversial code practised by Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“He’s got a faith he believes in, and he’s strong as a young man,” the 15-year-old’s father Les reportedly said. Zac was so paranoid that another person’s blood would be pumped into him, compromising his faith, that his strict instructions were written on a piece of paper in case he passed out before reaching hospital.
Details of the horrifying shark attack, which occurred about 40m offshore at Wharton Beach on December 2, were revealed after the Golebiowski family sold their story to a current affairs television show and a women’s magazine. -

Poor kid had his leg bitten off. Poor kid is in a JW family. Esperance is a nice place, just one congregation, they don't have much to do there besides surf and preach.
I guess this will be the big news in District W1 for the next year.

I hadn't heard about it but my manager at work saw it on TV last night. He was disgusted. He told me that the boy lost a lot of blood and he was lieing there looking grey and almost unconscious. Apparanlty he is recovering very slowly simply because of refusing blood.

I was sceptical of the JW connection initially when I saw him being loaded into the ambulance he gave the 'hang loose/god of rock & roll' sign, you know the one with the index and little fingers but it might not draw the 'gasp!' effect with some.
