Most of us know that Jesus` birth did not fall on the 25th of December. And according to many Rabi`s..taxes and census near the first century usually meant in the spring and fall.

Personally, I like the scriptural explanation re: Zacharias' scheduled time for temple duties per the 8th division of Abijah. From there you can tell which month he likely had his temple duties and shortly after he got back home, Elizabeth became PG with John the Baptist, and from there we know how far Mary was when she came to visit her, etc.
