Hello: An elder that I was discussing the 144,000 with asked for a reference for the # of true Christians martyred during the first couple of centuries. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Rodney stark's book, the rise of chriostianity gives some estimates of the numbers and growth of christianity in the first few centuries - http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Christianity-Marginal-Movement-Religious/dp/0060677015

I should've turned it around and asked him to give you reference as to who many anointed ones lived and died faithful in the first century lol...

Besides, who in hell is going to know who was martyred or how many. Sure there are a few who became well-known and how they died but not all of them and I'm sure lots of people died as martyred than we may know of.

    justahuman - but super nonetheless

This has always been a hot topic to me as the whole 144,000 literal number seemed absurd to me. Wasnt the addition of the great crowd “revealed” to rutherford when JW numbers outnumbered 144000 in the thirties so they needed to reconcile the inconsistency? Correct me if im wrong

If you ever read the Foxes Book Of Martyrs, there is a list of there martyrs all the way from the early church to the early 20th century.

If you ever read the Foxes Book Of Martyrs, there is a list of there (sic) martyrs all the way from the early church to the early 20th century ______ May I merely ask - how did Fox know for sure? I have read it, and it does not pretend to give the total numbers. Perhaps it is better to ask a question than to give a stupid answer. ______ BTW, we used to have a copy in the Kingdom Hall library at Oak Glen congregation in Oklahoma City - I wonder if it is still there?
