And that includes the music and singing. And the speakers are counseled not to be funny, tell jokes, and to leave the humor out.

Self-control is also very much needed when an elder gives a public talk. A public speaker should be a model of confidence and poise. Some try to amuse their hearers with many witty remarks made just for the purpose of getting laughs. This may betray a yielding to the temptation to please their audience.

Our conduct is very important, too. Of course, there is a time and place for recreation and other things besides field service, but when engaging in the field service our conduct should be exemplary. The preaching of the good news is serious work. We reflect joy in our work, but if we were joking and making a lot of unnecessary noise when going from house to house, people might not take seriously what we say; at least they would feel we certainly were not serious about our work as Christians.

Resist the temptation to make witty remarks just for the sake of making the audience laugh. This detracts from the dignity of the Bible’s message. True, we should take delight in our service to God. There may even be facets of our assigned material that are somewhat humorous. Yet, to reduce serious matters to laughing matters betrays a lack of respect for the audience and for God.

This, our final aspect of public Bible speaking to be considered here, requires the utmost in earnestness and sincerity. It makes no allowance for telling jokes or silly stories or otherwise injecting humor merely to get a laugh. The purpose of public Bible speaking is to instruct and build up. As has well been said, Paul ‘did not stoop to conquer with jocular exploit those whom truth and soberness assailed in vain,’ and neither should any of those who would imitate him even as he imitated Christ.—1 Cor. 11:1.

My mother once asked my daughter what did she do at church. My daughter replyed that she has fun. Mother was taken aback and told my daughter that she shouldn't be having fun at church. Mother then came to me and told me what my daughter had said. I think she was really bothered by it and she told me that Jocelyn shouldn't be having fun at church, it should be a more serious event for my daughter. I told her that I thought it was a good thing that Jocelyn has fun at church. Then I asked Mother if she has fun at the kingdom hall. Mother said no. lol

    Yes, they do.

Remember those little dogs with spring-loaded heads that people had in the rear windows of their automobiles back in the 60's?

Just go to a Circuit or District assembly and look around the auditorium during the Afternoon Session.
