Religious extremists intensify reign of terror in Georgia

TBILISI, Georgia—Early this morning religious extremists mounted a city-wide orchestrated attack on Jehovah's Witnesses, who were traveling to their annual religious convention in the adjacent city of Marneuli. The mob of some 100 attackers, many in masks, closed a main thoroughfare. They stopped the buses carrying delegates, dragged the people out by the hair, threw them to the ground and kicked them, punched them, and beat them with clubs. Women, children and the elderly were not spared. At least one bus and numerous cars carrying delegates were also seriously damaged in the process.

The attackers then headed to the convention site in Marneuli, where they continued the rampage. They trashed the convention site and a private residence and burned up the benches and religious literature in a bonfire. The attack was led by renegade Orthodox priest Vasili Mkalavishvili and his main associate Petre (Gia) Ivanidze. Despite organizing and participating in dozens of attacks against religious minorities over a period of two years, neither of these men has ever been taken into custody.

Jehovah's Witnesses had informed the authorities well in advance of their intention to hold a convention and had received guarantees from the police that proper measures would be taken to protect their right of assembly. Today's attack belies that statement. Victims who managed to get to police stations were derided by police officers and told that this matter was not a police affair. Police in Marneuli merely watched as the convention site was being trashed, but they made no attempt to intervene.

    Hello messenger,

very sad news indeed. That's what

happens when EXTREMISTS and FANATICS religionist want

to curb individual FREEDOM! We know that they are not

the only ones...the method may change but the desire is

    the same. It's all INTOLERANCE!

    Greetings, J.C.MacHislopp

You mean the police who are going to be killed by Jehovah in His Great Day of Glorious Vengeance? The police, who are, after all, part of a profession Witnesses are prohibited from joining?

What happened to these people is, of course, awful. The indignation expressed by the press release, however, is hypocritical. It is absurd to complain about the failure of a movement you condemn. It is absurd to seek the protection of those you deem marked for death, especially when they are marked for death by virtue of their role as protectors.

    hm.

Give the JWs this inch, and they'll take a mile. It might be time here to distribute the maturity of the DNC principle, so these Georgia types, bless their southern-fried soul, don't have to tax themselves to come up with a non-violent solution that plays into the JW perpetual motion machine.

That women and kids thing alone is going to cause so many uninvited violin concertos at the homes of "weak" and inactive types...

Nothing excuses the conduct of the behavior of Vasi Mkalavhvil whatever-the-hell his name is, but really my message to the Georgian Witnesses would be...

    Psalm 146:3,4:

3 Put not your trust in nobles, Nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs.
4 His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish.

Do not let some old men in a country far away tell you what to do in the absence of Scriptural support no less. And taking your money and using your suffering as a means of advancing their own cause!!! They don't care about you, they don't care if you live or die, you're being left out to swing in the wind. Wake up!!!

Dungbeetle...so much dung, so little time...

The Watchtower whines about what is happening to JW'S but it refuses to bend itself ...

They still DEMAND that JW's follow their prescribed activities of conventions and door banging. THEY refuse to give one inch to relieve the pressure on their r&f.

Is it God who makes the JW's do the things that bring on the people's ire...?

    Hi Teirce,

Unless I am mistaken, the Georgia referred to is not the State of Georgia in the USA. It is the one over somewhere in Russia.

Doh. I am a retard of the highest order, and I hate rushed readings. The principle remains the same, although it would be understandibly more difficult to inform the good Georgians of the tactic, even provided their government has a similar statute.
