JWs MUST live by the rules--------or else! Now we are pretty much a free people. Are you liberal or moderate or more conservative in your view? Would you rather have others tell you what to do or are you now your own person??
Are You Still Very Rules Oriented???

Lets qualify though - its just people who are free from the JW mindset. Beyond that theres also rules obeyed by the masses that serve no purpose beyond keeping people obedient, and one may or may not be free from those (possibly unwritten) rules. In fact some people think its a good thing, by following certain rules they have their act together. Rather than looking at it as a strict yes or no question, I tend to operate on the basis of relating with others and respecting them so that it's always dependent on the situation. I have very little respect for hard and fast rules. Sure some things I may agree with on a consistent basis, but it's not just because it's a rule. That's not a reason for anything.

First, do rules = laws?
I can see the need for laws; but I don't make those and I break them at my own peril, knowing what the consequences can be.
Rules tend to vary and aren't always written, so it is hard to know what is required, and it can keep changing. Much like the rules in the organization.
It is better to appeal to reason and common sense than an arbitrary rule.

Never was. My father was (is) a man of very liberal and freedom oriented views in life. He influenced me and formed my personalitly before I ever fell into WTBS machine. Which is why they could never accept me as one of their own. Though strangely enough even Jesus was a man who brought an end to rules-oriented system and replaced it with personal principles, yet every religion that sprung after him tried to impose more rules. I don't know why that is. Do some people feel safer if they are told what to do? I don't know.
Some people apparently cannot make distinction between bringing more structure into their lives and imposing more rules on themselves. What I always believed was that one can have at most two or three principles to live by, principle that ring true to them and are reflection of their deepest thoughts and personality. Anything that goes beyond that is doomed to failure.

I definetly do believe some people "feel safer" being told what to do. Not me!

I'm not keen on making rules just to have them. I was reading today how one state, Michigan, has a law stating that if you commit adultery, you can be put in prison for life! The judges are recommending that the legislature review their law because as it stands, a cheating spouse can go to the big house for life! Meanwhile, New Hampshire, the Live Free or Die state, plans on not allowing smoking in restaurants and bars. And why not?? Who wants to have to inhale 2nd hand smoke?
