It's Jonestown and their serving cool aid.

Another point made in the film is the courageous stand Witnesses take on blood transfusions which has resulted in great advances in modern medicine.
Whenever you have to defend a defenseless position, trot out the old red herring. Yes Witnesses are not likely to get blood transmitted diseases. And if they live close to some mega city hospital, they can get those fancy advanced procedures which might work.
Out in your town / my town if you are a Witness and have a traumatic loss of blood, say in an auto accident, you are probably going to die. I’ve seen Witnesses do the heroic thing and bingo we’re going to another funeral of a hero.
My best friend’s sister died in early her 20’s after an auto accident. The Witnesses all huddled around the parents encouraging them not let her be given blood. Dumb theology scores one: human life is zero.
My first wife had massive internal hemorrhaging. Being a good witness she refused blood. The doctors were desperate. She was screaming at them “No blood! No blood.” The doctor told me she was going to die within the hour. I hoped inside she would go unconscious and I could make a sensible decision to save her life. Not to happen.
Somehow she telephoned the elders who rushed on down. Sensing that I was wavering, they swarmed me, pulling me away from the triage area. “Let’s get a cup of coffee.” Other elders threatened the doctors with a lawsuit. Somehow the doctors pulled it off and she survived. We had two little kids. The elders didn’t care if they had a mother. They only cared about their flawed theology.
Later I wondered how Jews, who are supposedly keepers of the flame on the blood issue, understand the biblical injunction to not eat blood to mean just that – don’t eat blood.
Jehovah's Witnesses are more stubborn that the Pope. They get a wrong idea in their head, wrap it in unrelated scriptures and you've got theology. Most of them at the top are poorly educated and have not been exposed to proper academic background in logic or theology. It shows. Of course, that's a great recipe for a religion that is popular with a disenfranchised part of humanity. It also explains their fanatical desire to be different from the mainstream.
When I was a practicing JW, I felt like Jim Jones and Jonestown. Any minute they were going to start serving the Cool Aid.
