I was thinking of getting a degree in medical coding with one of those online colleges, has anyone tried those or know of anyone who tried it and what was the outcome? Are they legitimate degrees or is it a waste of time and money? Also, if anyone has any experience or knows of anyone with medical coding as a job, is it a good job or is it bad? Thanks for any help on this.

I don't know specifically about the courses that you are mentioning, but when I was looking for online music theory courses I consulted the Bear's Guide to Distance Education. They reviewed schools and reveal diploma mills. Check your library or do a Google search.

I did the medical coding classes. But I did them when I was asst. director of nursing. I needed them to help with billing.

But I didn't do them online.

Online courses from an accredited university are legitimate. In fact, you'll most likely receive a transcript that doesn't identify your credits as 'external', so no one will know you didn't do the course in person. I'm sure there's also some shoddy, poor-quality schools that aren't recognized. When it comes to something like medical coding, I'm not so sure what kind of accreditation there is. One way to find out if the courses will help you would be to talk to a potential employer in your field. If they say they'll hire you when you're finished with the course, you'll be fine.

Online classes are legitimate. Just make sure the school has the proper accreditation. My cousin does medical coding/billing. Seems to be plenty of jobs available.
