That's the headline for an article in The Spectator of 22 September 2001.
The article makes this point:
"A belief in the visble is a wonderfully steadying thing. The here and now can be horrific, shocking, painful, but if you think it is what counts, then you will so conduct yourself as to mitigate the horror, minimise the shocks, avoid the pain, for yourself and others. You will not lay waste this world in hopes of salvation in the next.
......
For is the pursuit of the next life not a corrupter of this one? Is not the doctrine that this world does not matter an invitation to callousness....?"
As I read this I thought of how the spiritual materialism of the Witnesses influences their actions in the present. Their setting their minds on a new system causes them to show a callous disregard at times for this system.
Just a thought.
BTW I don't necessarily agree with the thrust of the article but it was certainly 'food for thought'. You may like to check it out.
