A couple of years ago a NW flight kept passengers on the tarmac for over 8 hrs. because of back up at gates related to bad weather. Yesterday, Jetblue did the same thing for 11 hours. No food, water, toilet facilities or fresh air.

There is no question in my mind that I would pop an emergency exit door, which in turn deploys the slide, and get the hell out of there. I would defy them to charge me with anything and I would sue them for millions. I'm sure I would have a line of attorneys to choose from, all willing to work on a contingency. Why do people allow this treatment? Fear of breaking the 'rules'. Would you just set their until you were forced to relieve yourself in your pants or become ill from lack of food and water?

I think its pretty common practice to screw the customer as much as possible in the airline biz. Last year I got stuck on the tarmac for about 4 hours because of bad weather. They knew exactly what they were doing when they had everyone board the plane, only to immediately put us on hold. They just needed the gate for a plane that was coming in Im sure.

Same situation as regards the food and water, they claimed to only have 3 bottles on board and it wasnt a flight with a meal. At least we had a bathroom though.

There is no way I would take it, they would have to arrest me.

My wife and I were on a island hopper in Hawaii, that was having trouble latch one of the doors, when we started to get up to exit the plain, the FA pushed her back down in her seat and told us to stay, (We are not dogs.) As soon as we were out of her reach, we got up and exited the plain. We boarded the next flight and were gone, while they were still trying to fix the door.

When you are in a airport, or airplane these days. You are treated like a possible terrorist and you are doing your best to just deal with it. It is not easy, as delays, lost luggage and overbooking is more and more common. Service on the planes is terrible, if I could think of a word to make it would worse then terrible, I would. Flying is just something we have to do, to get somewhere in a decent time, and there is no alternative choice. About a month ago, there was another news article about planes that were diverted to Austin that were headed to Dallas, due to storms, that spent 11 hours on the tarmac with toilets overflowing and all sorts of negative things. Things are going from bad to worse, and I suspect someone will do as you suggest soon. If things keep going this way.

This is a complicated problem with very little the airlines can do without pissing off the customers. When there is inclimate weather that has a chance to go away, the FAA may issue a stoppage which will prevent planes from taking off. If the weather was really bad, the flight would have been cancelled outright. However, in these situations, the weather is just passing through. Now comes the tricky part, once the weather clears, the plane can leave but has to get squeezed into an existing schedule of planes waiting to take off and planes that may have been holding to land. The pilot may receive a clearance that is only good for 15 minutes. It is impossible to load a plane full of passengers in fifteen minutes.

Leaving the gate and waiting is beneficial to the airlines because it frees up a gate that needs to be used for passengers that just landed as well keeping the plane ready for an immediate departure when clearance is given. If the airlines went back to the gate and allowed passengers to disembark, this would create lengthy delays as well as possible create a huge safety issue if passengers decide not to return to the plane. Any passenger that doesn't return would have to have his/her bags off loaded. Also, pilots put in alot of work calculating weight, balance, fuel, and power needed for the flight. If these numbers change, it could put the airplane in danger.

I am not saying I agree with waiting on the tarmac for 8 friggin hours. I would say that if 90 minutes go by the flight should be outright cancelled.

The pilots and the flight attendants do not like when this happens at all. Did you know that most pilots and flight attendants only get paid for flight time? That means that the entire time the plane is on the ground they are not making any money.
